These albums prove beyond all reasonable doubt that while commercial recognition may have eluded the Sheffield-based quartet, they still accumulated one of the most enviable, enduring and unsung catalogues known to rock. This series begins with the trio of iconic, post-punk era LPs the Comsats recorded for Polydor - WAITING FOR A MIRACLE; SLEEP NO MORE and FICTION); and also CHASING SHADOWS coupled with FIRE ON THE MOON (the latter recorded while the Comsat Angels were known as Dream Command), which were both originally released by Island Records. All these expanded editions come with bonus second discs, plus booklets with, lyrics, rare photos and detailed liner notes by Tim Peacock (Record Collector) with participation from Steve Fellows. The little-known FIRE ON THE MOON was recorded while the Comsats were briefly known as Dream Command, a move encouraged by the label in an attempt to circumvent issues with the band name in the USA. The album was only ever released in the USAand the Netherlands, and quickly deleted. A real lost album for Comsat Angels fans

Algo así le ocurrió a un grupazo de nombre River City People. La década de los ochenta fue extraña. Mucha música y mucha experimentación con las nuevas tecnologías que se reproducían por momentos, algunos de ellos efímeros... En esa maraña musical podía salir a la luz casi cualquier cosa. Y ese inmenso bosque camufló la música que siempre existió y ha ido evolucionando poco a poco hasta nuestros días. Es ese pop folk, estilo Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians, 10.000 Maniacs... A esa fiesta se apuntó River City People con dos trabajos estupendos: "Say Something Good" del año 1989 y " This Is The World" del 1991, demostrando estar en la línea de los anteriores grupos nombrados... Pero los inicios de los noventa vivieron un fenómeno Grunge que lo inundó todo. Un fenómeno musical interesante, que aportó mucho a la música, pero que fagocitó todo el pop y parte del rock a su paso. Entre los damnificados, esos grupos de pop folk estilo RCP. El sonido sucio del Grunge, de una generacion desencantada, no dejaba lugar a las melodías folkies que versionaba el California Dreamin '... Eso, y los problemas internos del grupo, por supuesto, terminaron con la carrera de un grupo que tenía muy buenas hechuras, con temas de muchísima calidad como " Walking on Ice " y un discazo impresionante como Say Something God...   Del primer trabajo salio esta maravillosa cancion que fue single,  WALKING ON ICE, aqui esta la version extendida de 12". Pistas: A Walking On Ice (Extended Version)   4:55  B1 Black   3:26  B2 Huskisson Street (Revisited)   3:06  River City People were a folk rock quartet formed in Liverpool, England in 1986,by vocalist Siobhan Maher, guitarist Tim Speed, his drummer brother Paul Speed, and bassist Dave Snell. Siobhan, Tim and Dave had both been with Liverpool Band "Peep Show" until summer 1987 - at one point both bands co-existed. The group appeared on Channel 4's The Chart Show and soon afterward signed with EMI, releasing their debut single "(What's Wrong With) Dreaming?" in mid 1989. Their album Say Something Good followed a few months later, recorded in Los Angeles and produced by legendary producer Don Gehman. In the summer of 1990, the band scored their biggest hit with a cover of The Mamas & the Papas' "California Dreamin'". This was a double A-side with "Carry the Blame". "This is the World" followed in late 1991, but the group disbanded shortly after. Maher then teamed with ex-Bangle Debbi Peterson in the duo Kindred Spirit, releasing a self-titled 1995 album on Capitol Records. She released a solo album in 2002 called Immigrant Flower.

FISCHER Z - GOING RED FOR A SALAD (THE UA YEARS) VINILO ORIGINAL PRIMERA EDICION EMI ENGLAND 1990 FISCHER Z - GOING RED FOR A SALAD (THE UA YEARS) VINILO ORIGINAL PRIMERA EDICION EMI ENGLAND 1990 En una época en la que muchas bandas resultaban inclasificables, Fischer Z destaca por su particular estilo a medio camino entre el Punk, el Reggae y la New Wave. En Inglaterra se les comparó rápidamente con Talking Heads, pero fue en Alemania y Austria donde este grupo causó furor más que en su tierra natal. Hablar de Fischer Z es hablar, en cierto modo, de su líder y fundador John Watts, un músico intelectual y enigmático que supo combinar melodías pegadizas con letras de marcado carácter psicológico, social y político. El grupo lo forma en 1976 junto a su compañero de estudios Steve Skolnik. Completarían la banda el bajista David Graham y el batería Steve Liddle. Era una época en la que el punk arrasaba con todo en Inglaterra y sin embargo Fischer Z ofrecían algo más. Primero porque John Watts era un tipo muy culto y muy preocupado por los problemas sociales del momento. El estilo de Fischer Z fue rápidamente comparado como decíamos  con Talking Heads o The Police. En 1979 lanzaron su primer disco “Word Salad”, que incluía temas como el que acabamos de oír, y lograron una actuación en directo para el mítico programa musical británico “Top of the Pops”. Esta actuación resulta un desastre y perjudica a las ventas del disco. En 1980 llegará “ So Long ”, probablemente su canción más conocida gracias a la cual todavía conservan cierta fama. A mediados de ese mismo año Skolnik, el teclista, abandona el grupo y éste queda reducido a un trío en el Watts plasta definitivamente todas sus obsesiones. Aquí llegaría su disco más destacado “Red Skies Over Paradise”, un trabajo cuya inspiración reside en la guerra fría y la amenaza nuclear. Otro tema impresionante de este gran disco es “ Berlin ”. Llegados a 1990, su antigua compañía de discos la EMI Electrola Records lanza al mercado un disco recopilatorio bajo el titulo de Going red for a salad (The UA years). Este disco recopilatorio venia a recoger los mayores éxitos de la banda a lo largo de su paso por esta compañía de discos, destacando los mejores temas también de los primeros álbumes de John Watts. Dos años mas tarde de nuevo se vuelve a editar un nuevo disco de la banda bajo el titulo de Destination paradise. Con este trabajo la formación se consolido como una de las mejores de la época, ya que las temáticas de las letras hablaban de lo cotidiano, desde la guerra del golfo hasta canciones de amor en clave de humor. Tras este disco comienzan una nueva y extensa gira mundial, con la única intención de captar nuevo fans. The original line-up consisted of Watts (vocals, guitar), Skolnik (keyboards), David Graham (bass) and Steve Liddle (drums). The band's name is pronounced "fɪʃə zɛd" (fisher zed), a pun on "fish's head" with the "h" dropped, as is usual in many British regional accents. The pun also relies on leaving the "r" unpronounced as in common British non-rhotic accents. Fischer-Z's first hit was "The Worker" from the album Word Salad which firmly established Watts' ability to convey worldly political issues in narrative songs against a background of quirky pop and reggae-influenced music. In an interview in Record Mirror in 1981, Watts put this down to the remix of the song from the album version, which put the emphasis on the keyboards rather than his guitar. Skolnik departed after their second album Going Deaf for a Living, leaving Watts to take over keyboards. Watts' lyrics draw heavily on his experiences of studying clinical psychology and as a mental health care worker. Several songs on their third album Red Skies Over Paradise in 1981, such as "Berlin" and "Red Skies Over Paradise" were about the Cold War and the song "Cruise Missiles" was about the nuclear arms race and the mutual threat of the superpowers with nuclear war. Fischer-Z were more popular in mainland Europe than their native UK, especially in Germany, Belgium, The Netherlands, and Portugal (two top 10 hits and a No. 3 album). Fischer-Z were also successful in Australia, where they achieved two Top 20 hits with "So Long" from the album Going Deaf for a Living and "The Perfect Day" from Reveal.[2] After the album Red Skies over Paradise Watts dissolved the band in mid-1981, deciding his art could not evolve within a band context.

Johannes Schmoelling's influence is really felt for the first time here; Tangram, for all its crispness and melody, was simply a refinement of Force Majeure's principles, and the soundtrack to Thief not an album proper. On Exit, listeners are introduced to electronic music's next generation, notably on "Choronzon" and "Network 23," which brought the sound of the dancefloor into the mix (it hasn't left since). That's not to suggest that Tangerine Dream has stopped creating eerie, evocative music; both "Pilots of Purple Twilight" and the stately "Exit" will feel familiar to fans, and the opening "Kiew Mission" is a captivating commentary on nuclear war that includes vocals after a sort (a woman's voice reading locations in Russian). Exit ends on a surprisingly dark note, the alien and foreboding "Remote Viewing." It's on this track more than any other that Tangerine Dream returns to its past, invoking Phaedra and the sequencer-driven works that followed, as if to tell fans that Exit's changes weren't the result of a new band, just a new direction. With one foot in the excesses of the past and one clearly on the road to a more concise sound, Exit is a transitional work. As Schmoelling and, later, Paul Haslinger exerted their influence on Tangerine Dream's music, the emphasis shifted from dark and moody commentary to more positive subjects. It's worth noting that Edgar Froese's social conscience fuels much of Exit -- copies of the record were made available to a cross-section of Russian citizens free of charge to promote an open exchange of ideas at a time when nuclear annihilation was taken seriously. Future albums channeled Froese's activism to environmental concerns, which dovetailed with the band's by-then new age sensibilities. Both here and on White Eagle, Tangerine Dream ushers in the promise and the peril of a new world where reality has caught up with science fiction. Perhaps with such a message, the medium needed to be simpler and more direct.

Now this has got to be the most unusual thing on the face of the planet: to hear The Police do prog rock. On Schoener's previous album, Flashback, he had all three members, Sting, Andy Summers play on that album. I have to say I hadn't heard that one. With Video Magic, Stewart Copeland sat this one out, with Evert Fraterman in his place. I have to let you know that Schoener had Andy Summers play on many of his albums even way before The Police ever existed. The album opens with " Octagon ", which is an instrumental piece, dominated by Andy Summers guitar playing. Here, I get reminded so much more of Pink Floyd than anything The Police would ever do. Sting here is sticking to bass duty. " Speech Behind Speech " is a real trip: totally drenched with Mellotron, and Sting here is doing the singing. You know right away that Sting's voice is perfect for the usual music you expect the Police to do, but in a prog setting, it sounds really peculiar. " Natural High ", again has Sting doing vocals, it's about as close to The Police sound you're gonna get here, but it's still packed with Mellotron, and is actually an excellent song. All this Mellotron work came from Schoener himself. " Code Word Elvis " is largely an orchestral piece, no surprise, given that Eberhard Schoener had spent his time conducting orchestras. " Night Bound City " is a purely electronic piece that you know none of the dudes from The Police participated in, while " San Francisco Waitress " brings to mind Sting's post-Police solo albums like Dream of the Blue Turtles, especially because of the jazzy feel and sax (although sax here is by Olaf Kübler, who used a tenor sax, unlike Branford Marsalis who tended to soprano sax). The last piece, "Koan" is an instrumental piece that tends to be rather minimalist. Now this isn't going to be the greatest thing you'll ever hear. Police fans might find it a bit unsettling to see their heroes doing prog rock, and neither is it the most cohesive album out there (Schoener couldn't decide whether to do prog rock, electronic, or orchestral music), but if you're a proghead and you wonder what would happen if the Police were a prog rock band, give this album a try (you can also see that The Police would never be anywhere as popular as they were if they were a prog rock band, beside they came during the punk/new wave era and capitalized on that instead, which was to their benefit). But get this album if you can find it for cheap, which is what I did. Don't overspend. File this under: curiosity.

In 1952, Guthrie wrote and recorded a song at home titled ''I Don't Like The Way This World's A-Treatin' Me.'' The track appears on vinyl for the first time on a limited edition 10'' of the same name for Record Store Day 2019. Also found on this special release is a second version of the demo with new accompaniment from Wilco's Jeff Tweedy, who, along with Billy Bragg and Wilco, released a series of acclaimed albums featuring their interpretations of unearthed Guthrie lyrics. Mermaid Avenue, the first in the series, was nominated for a Grammy in 2000. If those two tracks weren't enough, I Don't Like The Way This World's Treatin' Me includes two versions of ''Beech Haven Ain't My Home'' (aka ''Old Man Trump''), whose lyrics were discovered within the Woody Guthrie Archives and chronicle the time the Guthrie family lived under landlord Fred Trump. As two drafts of the lyrics exist, the Riot-Folk Musician's Collective's Ryan Harvey combined them, with music composed by Johnny Irion (husband and musical partner of Woody's granddaughter Sarah Lee Guthrie). This release contains a version by Harvey featuring Ani DiFranco and Tom Morello (Rage Against The Machine/Auidoslave), and another from Irion's band U.S. Elevator. Available exclusively for Record Store Day as a 10'' EP, I Don't Like The Way This World's A-Treatin' Me is not only an historic, but a musical document, released in conjunction and with full cooperation from the Woody Guthrie Archives. As stated in the album's notes: ''These songs were mostly written well over half a century ago, but they are songs for our times to be sure.'' It is truly time for this music to be heard. This Frank Zappa-oriented release is part of the series, although this particular compilation is also geared to promoting both the artists 'signed' to Zappa and the two labels, Straight and Bizarre Records, which Zappa co-founded with Herb Cohen. These two labels were manufactured and distributed by Reprise Records. This Frank Zappa-oriented 'Zapped' release is the 6th issue in the series, a compilation geared to promoting both the artists 'signed' to Zappa and the two labels, Straight and Bizarre Records, which Zappa co-founded with Herb Cohen. (These two labels were manufactured and distributed for Reprise Records by Warner Bros. Records from mid 1969 [Previously 7Arts]). The black & white cover of this PRO 368 release has a portrait of Zappa and the title is "Zapped" without an accent over the 'e' (as on a subsequent/similar PRO 368 release with a 'collage' cover & Reprise label). This vinyl's label is pale blue with a dark blue 'Bizarre' text. Issues did occasionally appear later in retail outlets, particularly in Australia.

VISCAYNES - VISCAYNES & FRIENDS (GATE) VISCAYNES - VISCAYNES & FRIENDS (GATE) Discográfica:   Org Music Formed in Vallejo, California in the 1950's, The Viscaynes were a high school doo-wop act who are said to be the first recorded singing group of Sylvester Stewart (aka Sly Stone), and the launching point of his extensive career. The group gained some early notoriety with a performance on Dick Stewart's Dance Party, after which they were introduced to producer George Motola. Charting on KYA radio's top 60 chart in 1961, Yellow Moon became a hit song for The Viscaynes, though they split up around the time of the song's popularity. The Viscaynes & Friends is the first official full-length release from the group, coming to light only after a master tape reel was discovered more than half a century since the group disbanded. The release features seven tracks from Sly and The Viscaynes, along with one cut from the The Individuals and two from The Precisions, all of which were produced by Motola. The vinyl release comes in a gatefold jacket with extensive liner notes from author, historian, and radio host Rickey Vincent.

If anyone ever assembles a comprehensive Hooker discography that delineates not only his original releases, but where and when these have been reissued, he or she deserves a government grant or something, because it's not so easy to determine where or if some of these have not appeared on reissues or CD elsewhere. It does, however, yield a sizable scoop of material from Hooker's most primeval phase, the first half devoted to recordings he issued under his own name, including the well-known "Boogie Chillen" and "Crawlin' King Snake." It's the final ten tracks that might be more of a draw for collectors, since it features songs he cut under the pseudonyms Delta John, Birmingham Sam, and Texas Slim. All of those songs are recognizably early Hooker, with their irregular meters, foot-stompin' beats, and intense bursts of citified Delta blues notes. Whether because these were cut under assumed names or due to other reasons, occasionally it seems like these were opportunities to ramble afield into rather far-out territory for urban blues of the era. "Goin' Mad Blues," originally credited to Birmingham Sam, has a compelling almost rock boogie rhythm and violently strident guitar riffs, while Texas Slim vented a darker side of the Hooker persona, as indicated in titles like "Nightmare Blues," "Devil's Jump," and "I'm Gonna Kill That Woman." HANCOCK HERBIE - DIRECTSTEP HANCOCK HERBIE - DIRECTSTEP Discográfica:   Get On Down 2019 Black Friday Record Store Day Throughout the 1970s, legendary jazz pianist and composer Herbie Hancock engaged in a prolonged period of experimentation across sounds and recording formats, releasing several albums for Columbia that were only issued in Japan. 1979's Directstep was one such album, one that made use of a new form of recording technology called Direct-To-Disc. This method recorded masters, in real time, to acetate discs, rendering incredibly high fidelity LP pressings, but sacrificing the ability to edit or overdub, a challenge Hancock and his group were more than up to. Directstep utilized other technological advancements as well, incorporating brand new electronic instrument technology such as the electronic wind instrument the Lyricon, the freshly released Propet-5 synthesizer, and of course the Sennheiser Vocoder which would become a key part of the artist's arsenal during his electro-funk period in the 1980s. Beyond all that, Directstep is an incredibly solid collection of Herbie Hancock material, featuring stirring remakes of Hancock staples Butterfly and I Thought It Was You as well as brand new track Shiftless Shuffle.
