Named after a fictional band in Anthony Burgess's A Clockwork Orange, they recruited Glenn Gregory on vocals (who had been the original choice for lead singer of the Human League). Third album How Men Are was released in October 1984, and was preceded by the Top 25 hits Sunset Now and This Is Mine. Further single release …(And That's No Lie) helped the album attain Silver sales. It remains Martyn Ware's favourite album in their catalogue. The inner sleeve includes all the lyrics and credits, and the record is pressed on 180 gram blue vinyl.

Tras la edición de este disco, el dúo se trasladó a Nueva York, donde se les añadieron David Yarritu y Eden (Fiona Russell-Powell) al grupo, sólo para los efectos visuales, sin tocar ningún instrumento ni cantar. A principios de 1985 se publicó el brillante y pegadizo single Be near me, que subió hasta el puesto 26 de las listas británicas. Debido al éxito del single, How to be a...millionaire! consiguió entrar en el Top 30 tanto en Reino Unido como en Estados Unidos. Four singles were released from this album, "(How to Be A) Millionaire " (UK: 49, US: 20), " Be Near Me " (UK singles chart: 26, US Billboard Hot 100: 9), " Vanity Kills " (UK: 74, US: 91), and the fourth was " Ocean Blue ", (UK: 54). The album peaked on the UK Albums Chart at 28 and on the Billboard 200 at 30. On the cover the album's title is in the foreground lit up like a spotlight against a tri-tone background on which various quotes of the album's lyrics can be seen. There is also a drop shadow behind the title. No dialogue at the start of the song " Vanity Kills ". Eden (see band line up in next section) does the harmony vocal on the song " Ocean Blue ". Guitars completely absent from Side Two/Tracks 6–10. No cursing from Eden in the song "A to Z". Four seconds of silence between "A to Z" and "(How to Be a) Millionaire". Eden performs the breakdown vocal and plays the instrumental solo in the song "(How to Be a) Millionaire".

These three are augmented by the wonderful and often-underrated  Blue Mitchell  on trumpet and the equally illustrious  Sam Jones  on bass. Everyone is in top form on a varied set that takes in two  Adderley  originals (the fine ballad "Straight Life" and "A Little Taste"), a classic  Gigi Gryce  number ("Minority"), and  Miles ' oft-covered "Nardis." Filling out the program, we have a rare  Sam Jones -penned cut, "Blue Funk," and a lone standard in the  Rogers & Hammerstein  chestnut from Oklahoma, "People Will Say We're in Love." One of the highlights from  Adderley 's hard bop prime. "Things Are Getting Better" This title provides ample evidence why alto  Cannonball Adderley  is considered one of the masters of his craft. Here he joins forces with  Modern Jazz Quartet  co-founder  Milt Jackson  on vibes to create a variety of sonic atmospheres. They are backed by the all-star ensemble of  Wynton Kelly  on piano,  Percy Heath  on bass, and the one and only  Art Blakey  on drums. The moody "Blues Oriental" opens the set with  Jackson  immediately diving in with his trademark fluid runs and shimmering intonation.  Adderley  counters with a light and lively line that weaves between the rhythm section. The optimistic "Things Are Getting Better" is a good-natured romp as the co-leads trade and cajole each other into some downright rollicking exchanges. This directly contrasts with the sultry "Serves Me Right," which allows the combo members to demonstrate their collective musical malleability. The interaction between  Adderley  and  Jackson  sparkles as they entwine their respective playing with an uncanny singularity of spirit. The cover of  Dizzy Gillespie 's "Groovin' High" contains another spirited performance with some thoroughly engaging improvisation, especially during  Adderley 's voracious solos. "Sidewalks of New York" bops freely as  Jackson  unleashes some sublime licks against a hearty and equally boisterous sax.  Adderley 's "Sounds for Sid" demonstrates his uncanny ability to swing with a strong R&B vibe. With drop-dead timing and profound instrumental chops, this cut is undoubtedly one of the best from  Adderley 's earliest canon. The album concludes with a jumping reading of  Cole Porter 's "Just One of Those Things." While  Wynton Kelly  has been uniformly solid, his interjections stand out here as he bridges and undergirds the two as they banter with flair and aplomb. This set can be recommended without hesitation to all manner of jazz enthusiast, as it quite literally offers something for every taste. However, "In My Heart" became Texas's last song to date to chart in the United States, peaking at #14 on the Billboard Hot Rock Tracks chart. The song also reached #44 in France. The release of a third single was based entirely on the success of the band in countries such as France, Spain and other European countries, as the band's singles were doing particularly poorly in their native United Kingdom. The third single, " Alone with You ", saw Texas return to the UK Singles Charts Top 40 (for the first time since their debut single three years earlier), peaking at #32. The single also continued the success of the band in France, reaching #28. The fourth and final single, a remix of the title track "Mothers Heaven" was released in 1992, but failed to chart in any countries. Ironically, after the disappointing performance of singles from the album, the band then released a new cover version of the Al Green classic "Tired of Being Alone", which returned them to the UK Top 20. The track was not available on any album until the band's Greatest Hits album released in 2000. Mothers Heaven is the band's lowest charting album in the UK where it remains uncertified, however, it has been certified Gold in both France and Switzerland. Transvision Vamp were a genuine international pop supernova of the late '80s.
