And with good reason'or, actually reasons! First of all, as the house band of the hallowed Stax label, The MG's pretty much invented the sound of Southern soul, playing on records by everybody from Otis Redding to Wilson Pickett to Carla Thomas. Second, on their own as Booker T & the MG's, they came up with some of the most indelible instrumental jams of all time, including'but by no means limited to!''Green Onions.' And, third, each member of the band was an absolute monster on their instrument, to this day revered and copied by untold numbers of musicians. Indeed, by the time the mid '60s rolled around, bands on both sides of the Atlantic wanted to sound like Booker T. Jones, Steve Cropper, Al Jackson, Jr, and Lewie Steinberg (replaced about halfway through this collection by the great Donald 'Duck' Dunn). And what was that sound? Well, a typical MG's tune started from the bottom-up, resting on the rock-solid drumbeat of Jackson and the in-the-pocket bass work of Steinberg and, later, Dunn, over which keyboardist Jones and guitarist Cropper traded slinky and/or stinging licks. But these cats weren't just riff-happy groove masters; Jones basically codified the classic Hammond organ sound and Cropper's guitar tone remains the Holy Grail of anyone who's ever picked up a Fender Telecaster. Together, they recorded 49 single sides for Stax under the name of Booker T. & the MG's, and you'll find the first 29 (yes, 29!) of 'em right here, released on a single CD or double-LP pressed in blue vinyl and limited to 1000 copies. It wasn't easy to out-alien The Man Who Fell to Earth, but Nomi's demented harlequin act complete with plucked, Elsa Lanchester-like eyebrows, whiteface and widow's peak'not to mention a pink poodle doll pal 'pulled it off (Nomi often claimed he was from outer space). That got Nomi signed to RCA, where he recorded two studio albums (and adopted the oversized plastic tux that Bowie wore when he sang 'The Man Who Sold the World' ON SNL) before succumbing to AIDS in 1983 at the age of 39, one of the first celebrities to die from the disease. This is his 1981 debut record, generally regarded as his crowning achievement; it includes his signature 'The Nomi Song,' as well as just-plain-weird cover versions of Lou Christie's 'Lightning Strikes' and Lesley Gore's 'You Don't Own Me' that display the German countertenor's incredible vocal range and uncompromising artistic vision. In fact, it's so good that the fact that he went on to cut five other albums and produce artists ranging from Fontella Bass to Chuck Jackson to Little Johnny Taylor almost seems besides the point. This is a stone soul masterpiece, full of grit and groove, with a breathtaking stylistic breadth stretching from funky soul ('If You Took a Survey'; 'How Do You Spell Love') to romantic soul balladery ('I Get My Groove from You') to James Brown-style workouts ('Make Sure You Can Handle It') to socially-conscious, wah wah-drenched commentary ('The Whole Funky World Is a Ghetto') and all points in between. But what really makes this record mind-blowing is that Patterson wrote all but one song (the one he didn't write, 'Right On Jody,' is an answer song to Johnnie Taylor's big hit 'Jody's Got Your Girl and Gone'). COLOURBOX: THE OFFICIAL COLOURBOX WORLD CUP THEME [UK 1986] 7' COLOURBOX: THE OFFICIAL COLOURBOX WORLD CUP THEME [UK 1986] 7' Colourbox   "The Official Colourbox World Cup Theme"  single 7" (4AD)  1986  made in UK cat. num.  AD 605 #synth pop   A The Official Colourbox World Cup Theme 3:06 B Philip Glass 3:29   One of the legendary 4AD label's earliest and most under-recognized acts,  Colourbox  were among the first artists outside of the realm of hip-hop to rely heavily on sampling techniques; ultimately, their arty blue-eyed soul -- a fusion of far-ranging influences spanning from classic R&B to dub to industrial -- reached its commercial and creative apotheosis through their work on  M/A/R/R/S ' seminal "Pump Up the Volume" project, a reflection of the group's longstanding interest in the burgeoning underground dance music scene of the 1980s.  Colourbox  were primarily the work of London-based brothers Martyn and  Steven Young, who recruited vocalist  Debbion Currie  to sing on their 1982 4AD debut, "Breakdown."  Curry  was replaced by  Lorita Grahame  in time for the trio's 1983 re-recording of the same track, this time produced by  Mick Glossop.  Colourbox 's self-titled debut EP -- a collection of dub and scratching experiments heralding their first plunge into sampling technology, edited down from three hours of studio sessions -- appeared later that same year, with the single "Say You" following in 1984. After another 12", "Punch," the group issued 1985's "The Moon Is Blue," a teaser for its upcoming full-length LP, also a self-titled affair; "Baby I Love You So" and "The Official Colourbox World Cup Theme" both appeared the following year.  In 1987, at the behest of 4AD chief  Ivo Watts-Russell, the Young brothers teamed with labelmates  A.R. Kane  as  M/A/R/R/S  to record a single fusing the rhythms and beats from classic soul recordings with state of the art electronics and production. Complete with scratches by champion mixer  Chris "C.J." Mackintosh  and London  DJ Dave Dorrell, "Pump Up the Volume" -- a breakthrough effort heralding sampling's gradual absorption from hip-hop into dance music and ultimately the pop mainstream -- soon topped the British charts, the first 4AD release to accomplish that feat. Plans for a follow-up never materialized, however; stranger still, despite  M/A/R/R/S ' success, both the Youngs and  Colourbox seemed to vanish, with no future recordings forthcoming.
