Sus canciones fusionan ska, pop, soul, reggae y punk rock, y sus letras tratan temas de amor, unidad y temas socio-políticos. The Beat, que consta de Dave Wakeling (voz, guitarra), Ranking Roger (voz), Andy Cox (guitarra), David Steele (bajo), Everett Morton (batería), y Saxa (saxofón), publicado tres álbumes de estudio a principios de los 1980: Es que no puede parar, (1980), Wha'ppen? (1981) y el Servicio Especial de Beat (1982), y una serie de singles, incluyendo "espejo en el baño", "demasiado bueno para hablar", "no se puede acostumbrar a Losing You", "Manos fuera de ella es mía" y "Todos a por ti". The Beat se formaron en Birmingham, Inglaterra, en 1978, durante un período de alto desempleo y la agitación social en el Reino Unido. Ranking Roger, uno de los vocalistas de la banda, añade un sabor vocales jamaicanos de sonido de la banda con su estilo de tostado. Jamaica Saxa saxofonista añadido un sonido ska jamaiquino instrumental.
