T la Rock recorded this album for Sleeping Bag Records as the label's first rap act and showcased him at the height of his career. An old school legend, MC and dancer who was sampled by Public Enemy and Nas and heavily influential on artists such as Skill Cool J and the Def Jam sound, he would walk out on stage with Run -D.M.C. Highlights include 'Back To Burn' and 'This Beat Kicks', where T la Rock teamed up with visionary producer Kurtis Mantronik. Reissued with original artwork, printed inner sleeve.

BOOKER T. & THE MGS - COMPLETE STAX SINGLES VOL.1 BOOKER T. & THE MGS - COMPLETE STAX SINGLES VOL.1 Discográfica:   Real Gone Music With apologies to groups like The Meters, Bar-Kays, and Average White Band, when it comes to all-time great instrumental R&B bands, for most folks Booker T. & the MG's represent the gold standard. And with good reason'or, actually reasons! First of all, as the house band of the hallowed Stax label, The MG's pretty much invented the sound of Southern soul, playing on records by everybody from Otis Redding to Wilson Pickett to Carla Thomas. Second, on their own as Booker T & the MG's, they came up with some of the most indelible instrumental jams of all time, including'but by no means limited to!''Green Onions.' And, third, each member of the band was an absolute monster on their instrument, to this day revered and copied by untold numbers of musicians. Indeed, by the time the mid '60s rolled around, bands on both sides of the Atlantic wanted to sound like Booker T. Jones, Steve Cropper, Al Jackson, Jr, and Lewie Steinberg (replaced about halfway through this collection by the great Donald 'Duck' Dunn). And what was that sound? Well, a typical MG's tune started from the bottom-up, resting on the rock-solid drumbeat of Jackson and the in-the-pocket bass work of Steinberg and, later, Dunn, over which keyboardist Jones and guitarist Cropper traded slinky and/or stinging licks. But these cats weren't just riff-happy groove masters; Jones basically codified the classic Hammond organ sound and Cropper's guitar tone remains the Holy Grail of anyone who's ever picked up a Fender Telecaster. Together, they recorded 49 single sides for Stax under the name of Booker T. & the MG's, and you'll find the first 29 (yes, 29!) of 'em right here, released on a single CD or double-LP pressed in blue vinyl and limited to 1000 copies. Jones  (11-12-44, Memphis) son el esqueleto de las grabaciones del sello Stax y uno de los  equipos de sonido más impecables de los años 60, tanto por su respaldo instrumental de otros artistas como a nivel de grupo.  Esos chicos blancos y negros representaban oficialmente el sonido de Memphis. En 1956, Jerry Wexler llevó a Wilson Pickett a Memphis para una serie de grabaciones: de allí salió 'In the midnight hour', su primer éxito de un millón de copias, debido, además de a la voz profunda de Pickett, a la batería de Al Jackson, más elaborada y atrayente de lo habitual. En aquellos años trabajaban como músicos de estudio en el 90% de los discos realizados en los estudios Stax, pero el grupo era algo más que una simple banda de acompañamiento: Steve Cropper, en particular, además de ser un hábil arreglista y productor, se distinguía por su fascinante y personalísima forma de tocar su guitarra Telecaster. Su contribución en la composición de temas importantísimos, como 'Knock on wood', 'In the midnight hour', '634-5789', 'Dock of the bay', 'Don't fight it' y 'See saw', en la primera mitad de los años sesenta sirvió para crear un interminable catálogo para todas las futuras bandas de soul.  The MGs sabían trabajar con precisión y puntualidad en estudio, y sabían caracterizar a la perfección su música. Su secreto estaba en tener un sonido potente pero también refinado en las secciones rítmicas, eficaces y relajadas. Es un sonido cool, que con frecuencia contrasta con el estilo emotivo de los cantantes, pero que ha dado discos adecuados a todos los gustos y, sobre todo, a todos los tiempos. The MGs eran incansables: trabajaban como grupo en directo de Otis Redding, y en sus ratos libres estaban en el estudio de grabación para registrar sus temas o también versiones de otras canciones. A finales de los sesenta, The MGs empezaron a adoptar un estilo más ligero y menos blues, enfilando una serie de éxitos consecutivos: 'Hip hughery Groovin'', en 1967, 'Soul limbo' y 'Hang'em high', en 1968, y 'Time is tight', en 1969. Este último tema era parte de la banda sonora escrita por Booker T. para la película, comprometida con el movimiento negro, 'Uptight'.  Sin duda, este disco, es uno de los imprescindibles de finales de los 60's.
