THIRD EAR BAND Music From Macbeth (LP). reedición vinilo polanski banda sonora THIRD EAR BAND Music From Macbeth (LP). reedición vinilo polanski banda sonora Encargada por el aclamado director de cine Roman Polanski, la banda de culto Third Ear Band se enfrenta al reto de introducir un delirio de imaginación y creatividad en su personalísima versión cinematográfica de autor de Macbeth, una obra original de William Shakespeare. Los resultantes 44 minutos de sonidos imaginativos, divididos en 16 piezas extraordinarias, son un asombroso ejemplo de psicodelia abstracta y retorcida, enraizada en texturas de aromas medievales y clásicos. ¡Una monstruosa joya de Munster! A modo de aperitivo de lujo ante la próxima reedición del álbum Elements (incluyendo jugosos extras…), Munster Records nos trae Macbeth, la asombrosa banda sonora a cargo del grupo inglés Third Ear Band para la película de Roman Polanski, grabada y producida en 1971. Una mágica invitación para que el oyente se sumerja en territorios insospechados de audacia, imprevisibilidad e íntima experimentación abstracta-folky. Según el propio miembro fundador de la banda, Glenn Sweeney, la música se calificó como alquimia al ser producida mediante repetición. No obstante, tal repetición no sigue las mismas estructuras musicales de, digamos, Terry Rilley, Steve Reich o Philip Glass al contar con una naturaleza indefinida de pasajes atormentados y retorcidos de un peculiar encanto poético. La banda, formada en Canterbury, comenzó en 1967 tocando una especie de folk hipnótico y abstracto. Tras firmar con el próspero sello de culto Harvest, debutaron en 1969 con Alchemy, un álbum de improvisación instrumental de corte psicodélico y jazzy. En 1970 llegó una absoluta obra maestra, un álbum de título homónimo también conocido como Elements. Para Macbeth, su tercer trabajo, tan solo quedaban el líder Glenn Sweeney (percusión) y Paul Minns (oboe) de la formación original del cuarteto. Se grabó cuando la mitad de la banda -Richard Coff (viola y violín) y Ursula Smith (cello)- ya se habían ido, y estaban a punto de grabar un tercer disco llamado The Dragon Wakes, que se había planteado como un álbum eléctrico con influencias rock. Al margen de una pocas sesiones, el disco nunca llegó a terminarse. Los temas presentados en la película fueron compuestos de forma improvisada mientras veían extractos en blanco y negro de la obra. La música, grabada en seis semanas en los Air Studios de George Martin, en julio de 1971, tiene la misma dimensión poco convencional y bastante única que caracteriza a la película. Es música de autor para una película de autor. Encaja perfectamente en la narrativa libre, delirantemente idiosincrática, de la historia adaptada por Polanski. Glenn Sweeney resumía su creación mejor que cualquier intento por parte de los críticos: la música de Third Ear Band es un reflejo del universo, como la ilusión de un juego de magia, simplemente porque no podría ser otra cosa. Las palabras no pueden describir esta danza de sonido estática, o explicar la repetición alquímica buscando y, a veces, encontrando formas arquetípicas, elementos y ritmos…. Hay un ambiente general arty-medieval, y resulta folky lúdico en cortes como 'Overture', 'Iverness', 'Court Dance' y 'Fleance', donde las interjecciones experimentales funcionan como mecanismos coloridos. 'Fleance', con Keith Chegwin como cantante invitado, es un punto álgido deslumbrante. Asaltos poéticos de música concreta están presentes en temas como 'The Beach', 'Ambush', 'Prophesies', como si cada fragmento de percusión, canto de gaviotas o silbido agudo nos estuviera llevando hacia olas de miedo en lo desconocido. Hay otras preciosidades perdidas dentro de los 44 minutos del disco, como la melodía de oboe minimalista de 'Lady Macbeth', flotante como un ciempiés en sueños o los líricos acordes de guitarra en 'The Banquet' enfatizando un clímax de misterio absoluto. Y, por cierto, esta es la canción que tocan durante el banquete en el castillo cuando la banda sale durante unos pocos segundos en la película. Teniendo en cuenta la singularidad de la película, tenemos aquí una banda sonora sublime para la misma. Música que nos hace sentir lo insondable y lo impredecible, a veces discurriendo con suavidad, como una pieza sólida y misteriosa. La canción " But Not Tonight " fue el lado B estándar. " Stripped " y " But Not Tonight " fueron compuestas por Martin Gore. " But Not Tonight " fue incluida en la edición estadounidense de Black Celebration. Los otros lados B fueron las canciones " Breathing in Fumes " y " Black Day ". It was the first single from the album Black Celebration, and the band's thirteenth overall and sixth consecutive single to hit the UK Top 20, peaking at number 15. " Stripped " is well known for its innovative use of sampling. The underlying beat is a distorted and slowed-down sound of a motorcycle engine running, while the main melody begins with a car's ignition starting, and the end uses sounds of fireworks. The band's U.S. label Sire Records, however, decided to use the B-side " But Not Tonight " on the soundtrack to the movie Modern Girls and included the song on US editions of Black Celebration. As a result, the single was flipped, and released as " But Not Tonight " in the United States to help promote the movie. The band was not happy with this decision, seeing "But Not Tonight" as a useless pop track recorded in less than a day. The single did not chart. Surprisingly, despite previous criticism of the song by the band, an acoustic version of "But Not Tonight" was sometimes performed by Martin Gore on Depeche Mode’s Delta Machine Tour and is included in the 2014 album "Live in Berlin". The other two B-Sides are " Breathing in Fumes " and " Black Day ". " Breathing in Fumes " was a new song using samples from " Stripped ", mixed by the band and Thomas Stiehler. " Black Day " is an acoustic, alternate version of "Black Celebration" sung by Martin Gore, and is co-written by him, Alan Wilder, and producer Daniel Miller – the only Depeche Mode song where Miller receives a writing credit. The " Highland Mix " of " Stripped " was mixed by Mark Ellis (better known as Flood), who in the future would produce Depeche Mode's Violator and Songs of Faith and Devotion records. Some editions of the Black Celebration CD include the extended remix of "But Not Tonight" along with "Black Day" and "Breathing in Fumes" as bonus tracks. The music video for "Stripped" was the last Depeche Mode video to be directed by Peter Care and was filmed outside of Hansa Studios in Berlin. The music video for "But Not Tonight" was directed by Tamra Davis and is available in multiple versions. "Stripped" was featured in the film Say Anything....
