It was the first single from the album Black Celebration, and the band's thirteenth overall and sixth consecutive single to hit the UK Top 20, peaking at number 15. " Stripped " is well known for its innovative use of sampling. The underlying beat is a distorted and slowed-down sound of a motorcycle engine running, while the main melody begins with a car's ignition starting, and the end uses sounds of fireworks. The band's U.S. label Sire Records, however, decided to use the B-side " But Not Tonight " on the soundtrack to the movie Modern Girls and included the song on US editions of Black Celebration. As a result, the single was flipped, and released as " But Not Tonight " in the United States to help promote the movie. The band was not happy with this decision, seeing "But Not Tonight" as a useless pop track recorded in less than a day. The single did not chart. Surprisingly, despite previous criticism of the song by the band, an acoustic version of "But Not Tonight" was sometimes performed by Martin Gore on Depeche Mode’s Delta Machine Tour and is included in the 2014 album "Live in Berlin". The other two B-Sides are " Breathing in Fumes " and " Black Day ". " Breathing in Fumes " was a new song using samples from " Stripped ", mixed by the band and Thomas Stiehler. " Black Day " is an acoustic, alternate version of "Black Celebration" sung by Martin Gore, and is co-written by him, Alan Wilder, and producer Daniel Miller – the only Depeche Mode song where Miller receives a writing credit. The " Highland Mix " of " Stripped " was mixed by Mark Ellis (better known as Flood), who in the future would produce Depeche Mode's Violator and Songs of Faith and Devotion records. Some editions of the Black Celebration CD include the extended remix of "But Not Tonight" along with "Black Day" and "Breathing in Fumes" as bonus tracks. The music video for "Stripped" was the last Depeche Mode video to be directed by Peter Care and was filmed outside of Hansa Studios in Berlin. The music video for "But Not Tonight" was directed by Tamra Davis and is available in multiple versions. "Stripped" was featured in the film Say Anything....

This series begins with the trio of iconic, post-punk era LPs the Comsats recorded for Polydor - WAITING FOR A MIRACLE; SLEEP NO MORE and FICTION); and also CHASING SHADOWS coupled with FIRE ON THE MOON (the latter recorded while the Comsat Angels were known as Dream Command), which were both originally released by Island Records. All these expanded editions come with bonus second discs, plus booklets with, lyrics, rare photos and detailed liner notes by Tim Peacock (Record Collector) with participation from Steve Fellows. The little-known FIRE ON THE MOON was recorded while the Comsats were briefly known as Dream Command, a move encouraged by the label in an attempt to circumvent issues with the band name in the USA. I've got the next dance b. when love comes calling   One of the most distinctive vocalists who arrived during the soul era,  Deniece Williams  is known for soaring, four-octave soprano voice, late-'70s and early-'80s R&B classics such as "Free" and "Silly," and the 1984 number one pop hit "Let's Hear It for the Boy." Born  June Deniece Chandler  in Gary, Indiana, she grew up singing in a Pentecostal church, which forbid the congregation to listen to anything but gospel music. Outside of wanting a 1959 Thunderbird, she had no serious ambitions but was deeply interested in music. Her favorite singers were  Carmen McRae  (for her diction) and  Nancy Wilson, who, for  Williams, exemplified class and elegance. However, her she also looked up to her parents, both of whom sang. From 1968 through 1970,  Williams  recorded a handful of singles for the Chicago-based Lock and Toddlin' Town labels as  Deniece  (or Denise)  Chandler. None of them charted, but "I'm Walking Away" and "Mama, I Wish I Stayed Home" became Northern soul cult classics.  In need of employment and with college on the back burner, the fledgling singer was introduced to personal hero  Stevie Wonder  by John Harris, her cousin from Detroit, who happened to be on tour as a valet for  Wonder  (and was also his childhood friend). Her cousin arranged for  Williams  to meet  Wonder  backstage at a concert. Six months later,  Williams  was flown into Detroit by  Wonder  for an audition. Among the 26 who auditioned,  Williams, who sang "Teach Me Tonight," was one of three hired by  Wonder. The three became known as  Wonderlove. Her touring with  Wonder lasted for several years, a period in which she recorded background vocals for  Talking Book,  Fulfillingness' First Finale, and  Songs in the Key of Life,  Wonder -produced  Syreeta  and  Minnie Riperton  sessions, and other releases by the likes of  Esther Phillips  and  Roberta Flack.

These two labels were manufactured and distributed by Reprise Records. This Frank Zappa-oriented 'Zapped' release is the 6th issue in the series, a compilation geared to promoting both the artists 'signed' to Zappa and the two labels, Straight and Bizarre Records, which Zappa co-founded with Herb Cohen. (These two labels were manufactured and distributed for Reprise Records by Warner Bros. Records from mid 1969 [Previously 7Arts]). The black & white cover of this PRO 368 release has a portrait of Zappa and the title is "Zapped" without an accent over the 'e' (as on a subsequent/similar PRO 368 release with a 'collage' cover & Reprise label). With bassist  Sam Jones  and drummer  Bobby Durham,  Peterson  tears into the old gospel favorite "Travelin' On" with a passion second to none. Following it is a beautiful treatment of  Johnny Mandel 's timeless ballad "Emily," which runs for over ten minutes but never loses its impact.  Durham  sets the pace with his soft percussion to set up  Antonio Carlos Jobim 's "Corcovado" (later known as "Quiet Nights"), though  Peterson  devours the song whole with a breathtaking display of his formidable technique.  Francy Boland 's "Sax No End" was a relatively new composition, having been recorded for the first time just the previous year by the Kenny Clarke-Francy Boland Big Band. But one can almost hear a larger ensemble by listening to  Peterson 's virtuoso interpretation in an uptempo setting, assisted by  Jones ' agile bass and  Durham 's steady percussion.  Peterson  cools off his audience with an extended exploration of  Benny Carter 's "When Lights Are Low," though his fresh approach makes it seem like a brand new composition. Like other releases in  Oscar Peterson 's Exclusively for My Friends series,  Travelin' On  is warmly recommended.

This brilliant young musician now turns her attention to Franz Schubert (17971828) in her eagerly anticipated first recording of the composers works, including his great last Piano Sonata D 960, the four popular Impromptus D 899, and Liszts arrangement of Standchen from Schwanengesang. The Schubert album follows on from Buniatishvilis acclaimed series of single-composer albums for Sony Classical already featuring Liszt, Chopin and Rachmaninoff, as well as her two fascinating collections Motherland and Kaleidoscope. Khatia Buniatishvili made her debut as a soloist with an orchestra when she was only six years old; by the age of ten she had played in Europes most prestigious halls, as well as in Israel and the United States of America, and has never looked back. Her career has advanced into many new dimensions, especially since receiving the Borletti-Buitoni Trust Award in 2010 and participating in the pioneering BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artists scheme (200911), as well as twice receiving the ECHO Klassik Award. Much in demand internationally, she performs regularly at leading halls around the world with top orchestras and conductors of the day.

The ones who loved The Wipers as much as Burt Bacharach as much as The Shangri-Las. They were the band that made the punks feel like they could sing harmonies and pop fans could get in touch with their anger. Cassie Ramone’s lyrics alternated between love, loss and rage. They were heart-on-their-sleeves romantics in one breath and a spiraling explosion of feedback in the next. After their third album -- 2011’s Share the Joy -- the members of Vivian Girls parted ways and the band who had known each other since they were teenagers, went about the business of living. Katy Goodman and Ali Koehler both moved to Los Angeles, continued making music (La Sera for Goodman, Best Coast and Upset for Koehler) and started families. The trio began playing together again during the spring of 2018 and by October Memory was recorded with producer Rob Barbarto (Kevin Morby, The Fall). Memory is an album filled with personal reflections on toxic relationships, the false promise of new love, mental health struggles, and finding ways to accept oneself amidst it all. Fittingly, the sonic textures of the album match this sense of desperation and longing. It’s a loud, snarling journey and there’s a sense of streamlined direction and intensity to the performances: it sounds like a band returning to a core idea of itself.

Schoener quedó tan contento con el resultado que contrató a Andy para “Trance-formation” (1977), en donde tuvo absoluta libertad para grabar en los huecos que le dejaba la banda a la que acababa de vincularse, The Police.El numeroso y bien remunerado trabajo que ofrece Schoener pronto alcanza a los tres miembros de la banda – el conductor alemán no necesitaba un bajista pero cambió de opinión cuando escuchó cantar a Sting, decidiendo incluir también su voz en sus recargados espectáculos -, quienes aprovechan la estancia en Munich – en noviembre del 77 – para grabar un álbum, “Flashback” (1978) y dar alguna comparecencia en vivo. Now this has got to be the most unusual thing on the face of the planet: to hear The Police do prog rock. On Schoener's previous album, Flashback, he had all three members, Sting, Andy Summers play on that album. I have to say I hadn't heard that one. With Video Magic, Stewart Copeland sat this one out, with Evert Fraterman in his place. I have to let you know that Schoener had Andy Summers play on many of his albums even way before The Police ever existed. The album opens with " Octagon ", which is an instrumental piece, dominated by Andy Summers guitar playing. Here, I get reminded so much more of Pink Floyd than anything The Police would ever do. Sting here is sticking to bass duty. " Speech Behind Speech " is a real trip: totally drenched with Mellotron, and Sting here is doing the singing. You know right away that Sting's voice is perfect for the usual music you expect the Police to do, but in a prog setting, it sounds really peculiar. " Natural High ", again has Sting doing vocals, it's about as close to The Police sound you're gonna get here, but it's still packed with Mellotron, and is actually an excellent song. All this Mellotron work came from Schoener himself. " Code Word Elvis " is largely an orchestral piece, no surprise, given that Eberhard Schoener had spent his time conducting orchestras. " Night Bound City " is a purely electronic piece that you know none of the dudes from The Police participated in, while " San Francisco Waitress " brings to mind Sting's post-Police solo albums like Dream of the Blue Turtles, especially because of the jazzy feel and sax (although sax here is by Olaf Kübler, who used a tenor sax, unlike Branford Marsalis who tended to soprano sax). The last piece, "Koan" is an instrumental piece that tends to be rather minimalist. Now this isn't going to be the greatest thing you'll ever hear. Police fans might find it a bit unsettling to see their heroes doing prog rock, and neither is it the most cohesive album out there (Schoener couldn't decide whether to do prog rock, electronic, or orchestral music), but if you're a proghead and you wonder what would happen if the Police were a prog rock band, give this album a try (you can also see that The Police would never be anywhere as popular as they were if they were a prog rock band, beside they came during the punk/new wave era and capitalized on that instead, which was to their benefit). But get this album if you can find it for cheap, which is what I did. Don't overspend. File this under: curiosity.

The first major-label, digitally recorded album,  Bop  is a nice set of moderately known to obscure tunes from the '50s and '60s (along with a  Cooder / Tim Drummond  original) that doesn't always live up to its promise.  Cooder  and his excellent band, which includes the rhythm section of  Tim Drummond  and  Jim Keltner  along with guitarist  David Lindley, understand the material and are more than capable of laying down a decent groove, but something must have gotten lost in translation from what was played to what came across on the recording. There's a thinness to the tracks that undermines the performances, which according to  Cooder  is due to the digital recording. If you check out the live version of  Bop Till You Drop 's opener, "Little Sister," from the No Nukes record (using the same band), you can see what surely could have been. Still,  Bop  is worthwhile given  Cooder 's penchant for choosing great tunes, as well as the tight performances, brilliant guitar work, and a handful of great guest vocalists (including  Chaka Khan). A few of the highlights include his arrangement of the early-'60s  Elvis  hit "Little Sister," the soulful "The Very Thing That Makes You Rich (Makes Me Poor)," an instrumental take on  Ike & Tina Turner 's "I Think It's Gonna Work Out Fine," and "I Can't Win," featuring  Cooder 's longtime cohort  Bobby King  on lead vocal.
