OSCAR PETERSON: TRAVELLIN' ON [UK 1969] LP OSCAR PETERSON: TRAVELLIN' ON [UK 1969] LP (MPS - Polydor)  1969  made in UK cat. num.  583 772 #jazz   A1 Travellin' On 2:25 A2 Emily 10:08 A3 Quiet Nights 7:20 B1 Sax No End 5:52 B2 When Lights Are Low 10:49   This is yet another memorable concert by  the Oscar Peterson Trio  recorded in  Hans Georg Brunner-Schwer 's excellent studio. With bassist  Sam Jones  and drummer  Bobby Durham,  Peterson  tears into the old gospel favorite "Travelin' On" with a passion second to none. Following it is a beautiful treatment of  Johnny Mandel 's timeless ballad "Emily," which runs for over ten minutes but never loses its impact.  Durham  sets the pace with his soft percussion to set up  Antonio Carlos Jobim 's "Corcovado" (later known as "Quiet Nights"), though  Peterson  devours the song whole with a breathtaking display of his formidable technique.  Francy Boland 's "Sax No End" was a relatively new composition, having been recorded for the first time just the previous year by the Kenny Clarke-Francy Boland Big Band. But one can almost hear a larger ensemble by listening to  Peterson 's virtuoso interpretation in an uptempo setting, assisted by  Jones ' agile bass and  Durham 's steady percussion.  Peterson  cools off his audience with an extended exploration of  Benny Carter 's "When Lights Are Low," though his fresh approach makes it seem like a brand new composition. Like other releases in  Oscar Peterson 's Exclusively for My Friends series,  Travelin' On  is warmly recommended.

Souther’s 1984 Nashville masterpiece — now back on vinyl! After hitting the top 10 twice with “You’re Only Lonely” and his duet with James Taylor, “Her Town Too,” JD Souther released his only album in the 1980’s—Home By Dawn, produced by David Malloy (Eddie Rabbit, Kenny Rogers, Reba McEntire). As Souther took distinctive creative turns with each release, Home By Dawn emerged at the beginning of the new wave of Country music. In fact, legendary producer/engineer, and David’s father, Jim Malloy (Townes Van Zandt, Eddy Arnold, Sammi Smith) told Souther, “You were about 15 minutes ahead of your time!” That timing was confirmed when Dixie Chicks covered “I’ll Take Care Of You” on their 12X Platinum Wide Open Spaces. The album has steadily earned a reputation as the groundbreaking and important statement it was, and continues to be. From rock to roots-rock to rockabilly, Home By Dawn took Souther in a direction reflecting his Texas upbringing. Home By Dawn has proven to be an important and influential album released before its time. Now is the perfect time to discover, or rediscover it.

The band's second record HIGH HAT was produced by Steve Earle and Ray Kennedy and released on Earle's Warner Brothers imprint label E-Squared Record. A 20th anniversary reissue of HIGH HAT on cd, digital and vinyl (for the first time) was released in March 2018 and a brand new and 4th full length studio record TOP OF THE WORLD featuring founding members and leaders Kenny Roby and Rob Keller along with new members Dan Davis and Luis Rodriguez was released the following summer. The Jag Sessions recordings are a collection of unreleased rarities and record quality demos recorded by Byron McCay at Jag Studios in Raleigh, NC made between 1996 and 1998 that previously have only been circulated among fans and as digtially as a low flying cd releases for sale at shows. This release is the first time any versions of this collection and versions of these songs have been available on vinyl. Some of the collection is made up of songs originally recorded for Columbia Records in 1996 for a demo deal with the label that never came to fruition. The songs from 1998 in the set are songs that were recorded for pro demos and potential release as a follow up to HIGH HAT as an EP. Pressed on red vinyl, the album comes with download card that features 2 extra songs.

Initially, the 19-piece orchestra combined saxophonist  Peter Brotzmann 's trio and trumpeter  Manfred Schoof 's quintet with a phalanx of other early giants of European free jazz (mostly from Germany); they included, among many others, trombonist  Albert Mangelsdorff, woodwind players  Gunter Hampel  and  Willem Breuker, vibist  Karl Berger, bassists  Buschi Niebergall  and  Peter Kowald, and drummers  Jaki Liebezeit  (of the rock group  Can) and  Sven-Åke Johansson. The initial performance was a historic and rousingly cacophonous success, and  Von Schlippenbach  kept the group going, serving as its musical director for most of the next two decades. Naturally, the membership fluctuated quite a bit; by the early '70s, the group had more of a British presence, with players like guitarist  Derek Bailey, saxophonist  Evan Parker, and trombonists  Malcolm Griffiths  and  Paul Rutherford, plus trumpeter  Kenny Wheeler  and drummer  Han Bennink.  Von Schlippenbach  left for a bit in 1971, but returned the following year, and the group began playing outside of Germany more often beginning in 1974, which also marked the point at which more of their music was preserved on record (much of it on FMP). As the orchestra evolved, it relied less and less on structured arrangements, eventually becoming completely free. However, since a 20th-anniversary celebration and recording session, the group has mostly been silent.

POWELL BUD - ESSEN JAZZ FESTIVAL POWELL BUD - ESSEN JAZZ FESTIVAL Discográfica:   Org Music Pianist Bud Powell can be heard in prime form during this live set from The Essen Jazz Festival Concert, recorded in April of 1960. The set finds Powell backed by an all-star trio, featuring bassist Oscar Pettiford and drummer Kenny Clarke. The great tenor Coleman Hawkins joins the trio for three of the nine selections, including an incredible take of his own composition, Stuffy. The classic concert was remastered at Infrasonic Mastering and pressed on audiophile-grade vinyl at Pallas in Germany. Along with Charlie Parker, Monk, and Dizzy Gillespie, Powell was a leading figure in the development of modern jazz, or bebop. His virtuosity led many to call him the Charlie Parker of the piano. Powell was also a composer, and many jazz critics credit his works and his playing as having greatly extended the range of jazz harmony.

Este grupo norteamericano de rock y hard rock originarios de la ciudad de Cleveland, Ohio, atesoran tras de si una rica pero poco valorada obra discográfica y que es primordial en la historia del rock; por él habrían de pasar excelentes músicos, fundamentales luego en el devenir de bandas importantes dentro del panorama rock La formación inicial cuenta con Glen Schwartz (guitarra), Tom Kriss (bajo) y el líder y fundador, el batería Jim Fox que a mediados de 1966 logran una reputada fama en el circuito de rock de Cleveland y sus alrededores. Pero esta alineación duraría poco ya que a principios del 69, Schwartz abandona para unirse al grupo Pacific Gas and Electric y es sustituido por el guitarrista Joe Walsh, quien pronto toma las riendas del grupo con su personalidad y su talento. En esta época el grupo llego a talonear a Cream en la ciudad de Detroit, realizando una soberbia actuación que no hizo más que asentar la calidad e incrementar la popularidad del grupo a nivel nacional. El primer LP, Yer album (69), les revela como gran banda. Tras él se va Kriss y entra Dale Peters (bajo y voz). Con esta formación, el trío graba sus tres mejores obras: Rides again (70), Thirds (71) y el doble LP grabado en vivo Live in concert (72). Y con el respaldo de Pete Townshend, James Gang se presentan en Europa con gran éxito, teloneando a The Who. Posteriormente la banda intervendría en la película Zachariah, un musical western surrealista basado en la novela de Herman Hesse; Siddartha. En noviembre de 1971, Joe Walsh decide abandonar la nave para seguir en solitario una carrera llena de éxitos. Walsh junto a Joe Vitale y Kenny Passarelli formarían la banda Barnstorm y publicaron su primer álbum Barnstorm (1972) y un año despues el excelente álbum The Smoker You Drink, The Player You Get (1973) que contenía el hit Rock Mountain Way que se convertiría en uno de los clásicos del rock de todos los tiempos. Poco después la desgracia de ceba con Walsh al perder a su hija pequeña en un atropello. Destrozado por esta perdida Walsh decide disolver el grupo y se retira durante mas de un año, hasta que casi a finales de 1974 se anima a publicar su primer álbum en solitario So What (1974) al que seguirán los exitosos You Can't Argue with a Sick Mind (1976), But Seriously Folks (1978) o There Goes The Neighborhood.(1981). Pero sin duda seria su entrada como guitarrista de The Eagles y su primordial contribución al apoteósico Hotel California (1976) y al magnifico The long Run (1979) lo que le llevaría al estrellato mas absoluto. Pero siguiendo con James Gang, después del abandono de Joe Walsh la banda se amplia con varios músicos mas por un lado Domenic Troyano (guitarra y voz) y por otro Roy Kenner (voz) que junto a Fox y Peters, graban los álbumes Straight shooter (72) y Passin' thru' (73). En 1973, es Troyano quien abandona para unirse a The Guess Who, siendo reemplazado por el guitarrista Tommy Bolin con el se publican los brillantes Bang (73) y Miami (74). Pero el año siguiente Bolin acepta la llamada de Roger Glover para unirse a Deep Purple en sustitución de Ritchie Blackmore, siendo seguido de Kenner, que también deja la banda. En 1975, Fox y Peters reaparecen con Rick Shack (guitarra) y Buba Keith (guitarra y voz), con quienes graban los mediocres Newborn (75) y Jesé come home (76), que se convierten en los dos últimos trabajos oficiales del grupo y posteriormente se precipita la disolución definitiva de James Gang. Ya en 1972 se había editado el recopilatorio The best of James Gang, con lo mejor de la etapa estelar, en la que Joe Walsh era el hombre fundamental de una banda que ha pasado a la historia como una de las pioneras del hard rock norteamericano.
