Just as  ELO 's follow-up to the sweeping  Discovery  seemed tame by comparison, so  The Present  failed to match the grandiose arrangements of  the Moodies ' previous record. It's still a solid effort, bolstered by strong songwriting and pleasant melodies, but as good as the opening "Blue World" is, its downbeat message is no substitute for the clarion call of "The Voice."  The Present  seems to make a conscious effort to scale back the arena-size sound of their previous album, returning to the warmly rendered ballads of old.  Patrick Moraz, whose keyboards were a revelation on  Long Distance Voyager, plays a diminished role here, as  Justin Hayward 's guitar takes more of the lead, suggesting a poor man's  Phil Manzanera  or  David Gilmour. While it charted well and provided hit singles in "Blue World" and "Sitting at the Wheel" (again, it's  John Lodge  who provides the most invigorating track),  The Present  is a gift that listeners will need to warm up to over time. Only after several sittings do  Hayward 's lush ballads like "Meet Me Halfway" and "Running Water" sink in. Following the format of their last effort, the closing tracks are given to  Ray Thomas, who once more proves a compelling presence (he's also the only good thing about "Going Nowhere"). "I Am" and "Sorry" amount to little more than love songs, but  Thomas ' sense for dramatic arrangements manages to elevate the musical discussion. Given the now infrequent release of new albums by  the Moody Blues, more could have been expected from  The Present, but less could have been achieved (as the disappointing  Keys of the Kingdom  demonstrated). If it's merely average by  Moodies  standards, at least  The Present  didn't bode ill for the future.

Joining  Adderley  for the six tracks here are fellow  Davis  alumni  Philly Joe Jones  on drums and  Bill Evans  on piano. These three are augmented by the wonderful and often-underrated  Blue Mitchell  on trumpet and the equally illustrious  Sam Jones  on bass. Everyone is in top form on a varied set that takes in two  Adderley  originals (the fine ballad "Straight Life" and "A Little Taste"), a classic  Gigi Gryce  number ("Minority"), and  Miles ' oft-covered "Nardis." Filling out the program, we have a rare  Sam Jones -penned cut, "Blue Funk," and a lone standard in the  Rogers & Hammerstein  chestnut from Oklahoma, "People Will Say We're in Love." One of the highlights from  Adderley 's hard bop prime. "Things Are Getting Better" This title provides ample evidence why alto  Cannonball Adderley  is considered one of the masters of his craft. Here he joins forces with  Modern Jazz Quartet  co-founder  Milt Jackson  on vibes to create a variety of sonic atmospheres. They are backed by the all-star ensemble of  Wynton Kelly  on piano,  Percy Heath  on bass, and the one and only  Art Blakey  on drums. The moody "Blues Oriental" opens the set with  Jackson  immediately diving in with his trademark fluid runs and shimmering intonation.  Adderley  counters with a light and lively line that weaves between the rhythm section. The optimistic "Things Are Getting Better" is a good-natured romp as the co-leads trade and cajole each other into some downright rollicking exchanges. This directly contrasts with the sultry "Serves Me Right," which allows the combo members to demonstrate their collective musical malleability. The interaction between  Adderley  and  Jackson  sparkles as they entwine their respective playing with an uncanny singularity of spirit. The cover of  Dizzy Gillespie 's "Groovin' High" contains another spirited performance with some thoroughly engaging improvisation, especially during  Adderley 's voracious solos. "Sidewalks of New York" bops freely as  Jackson  unleashes some sublime licks against a hearty and equally boisterous sax.  Adderley 's "Sounds for Sid" demonstrates his uncanny ability to swing with a strong R&B vibe. With drop-dead timing and profound instrumental chops, this cut is undoubtedly one of the best from  Adderley 's earliest canon. The album concludes with a jumping reading of  Cole Porter 's "Just One of Those Things." While  Wynton Kelly  has been uniformly solid, his interjections stand out here as he bridges and undergirds the two as they banter with flair and aplomb. This set can be recommended without hesitation to all manner of jazz enthusiast, as it quite literally offers something for every taste. CAPTAIN BEEFHEART - SUN ZOOM SPARK 1970 TO 1972 CAPTAIN BEEFHEART - SUN ZOOM SPARK 1970 TO 1972 Rhino intends to change that with a limited edition four-LP collection that revisits the albums Captain Beefheart (aka Don Van Vliet) recorded with the Magic Band in the early Seventies. It includes all three albums, which have been remastered for the first time, as well as an entire disc featuring 14 previously unissued outtakes from that era. Recorded over a couple of weeks in the summer of 1970 at United Recording Group in Hollywood, Lick My Decals Off, Baby was released the following October. One of Van Vliet's favorites, the album represents the apex of his dissonant style and includes such standout tracks as the quirky-funny I Love You, You Big Dummy and the exquisite solo guitar piece One Red Rose That I Mean. It was followed by The Spotlight Kid, which was recorded at The Record Plant in Los Angeles during the summer of 1971. It features a more barebones, blues-rock sound on songs like Click Clack, I'm Gonna Booglarize You Baby and Alice In Blunderland. Lester Bangs wrote in Rolling Stone (March '72) that Beefheart had struck the balance between intensely personal type of statement and mass appeal, praising the album for its wit and genius.Soon after, Clear Spot was released. Recorded in the summer of 1972, the album introduced several standout tracks, such as the vulnerable love song My Head Is My Only House Unless It Rains, the soul ballad Too Much Time, and the pulsing Big Eyed Beans from Venus. The fourth and final LP in SUN ZOOM SPARK includes unreleased tracks and is a trove of alternate versions, rehearsals and outtakes from the sessions for The Spotlight Kid and Clear Spot. The LP reveals just how much some songs evolved before being released. Among the highlights are a sung-version of I Can't Do This Unless I Can Do This/Seam Crooked Sam, which became a spoken-word performance on Bat Chain Puller; a raucous, off-kilter version of Dirty Blue Gene that pointed the way to the final version on Doc a

And with good reason'or, actually reasons! First of all, as the house band of the hallowed Stax label, The MG's pretty much invented the sound of Southern soul, playing on records by everybody from Otis Redding to Wilson Pickett to Carla Thomas. Second, on their own as Booker T & the MG's, they came up with some of the most indelible instrumental jams of all time, including'but by no means limited to!''Green Onions.' And, third, each member of the band was an absolute monster on their instrument, to this day revered and copied by untold numbers of musicians. Indeed, by the time the mid '60s rolled around, bands on both sides of the Atlantic wanted to sound like Booker T. Jones, Steve Cropper, Al Jackson, Jr, and Lewie Steinberg (replaced about halfway through this collection by the great Donald 'Duck' Dunn). And what was that sound? Well, a typical MG's tune started from the bottom-up, resting on the rock-solid drumbeat of Jackson and the in-the-pocket bass work of Steinberg and, later, Dunn, over which keyboardist Jones and guitarist Cropper traded slinky and/or stinging licks. But these cats weren't just riff-happy groove masters; Jones basically codified the classic Hammond organ sound and Cropper's guitar tone remains the Holy Grail of anyone who's ever picked up a Fender Telecaster. Together, they recorded 49 single sides for Stax under the name of Booker T. & the MG's, and you'll find the first 29 (yes, 29!) of 'em right here, released on a single CD or double-LP pressed in blue vinyl and limited to 1000 copies.
