After a concert and a sandstorm, Tinariwen hit the road and head for Mauritania, via southern Morocco, Western Sahara and the Atlantic coast. The destination is important but no more so than the journey itself. Tinariwen are joined by their French production team, who arrive in old camper van that’s been converted into a makeshift studio. The journey to Nouakchott, capital of Mauritania, takes a dozen days or so. Every evening, the caravan stops to set up camp and the members of Tinariwen get to work under the stars – to prepare for the recording, talking things through, letting their guitar motifs, thoughts and long buried songs come. Then, during a final camp in the desert around Nouakchott that lasts about fifteen days, to an audience of scorpions, the band record their songs under large tent. In a few takes, without headphones or effects. The Mauritanian griotte Noura Mint Seymali and her guitarist husband, Jeiche Ould Chigaly, come to throw their musical tradition on the embers lit by Tinariwen – the curling vocals of Noura Mint Seymali on the song ‘Amalouna’ will become a highlight. This nomadic album, recorded in a natural setting, is as close as you can get to Tinariwen. And also, therefore, to the idea that things can evolve: bassist Eyadou plays a lot of acoustic guitar; percussionist Said tries his hand at new instruments; Abdallah exhumes songs that he’s never played on stage with Tinariwen. And that violin that appears on several songs and reminds you of the traditional imzad; It’s actually played by Warren Ellis. Katy Goodman and Ali Koehler both moved to Los Angeles, continued making music (La Sera for Goodman, Best Coast and Upset for Koehler) and started families. The trio began playing together again during the spring of 2018 and by October Memory was recorded with producer Rob Barbarto (Kevin Morby, The Fall). Also, the performance occurred during the filming of a currently unreleased documentary entitled San Fermin: No Promises, which provides a glimpse into the five-year history of critically-acclaimed indie rock band San Fermin. The piece details the band's rise from its classical music underpinnings to a touring enterprise and perennial festival performer. Shown through the lens of sold-out shows on the east and west coast, everyday life in New York City, and studio recording and rehearsal, the film unwraps the relationships that have transformed a grandiose, logistically impractical endeavor from bandleader Ellis Ludwig-Leone into a unique community of musicians and friends. As the journey unfolds, this community is tested by the departure of its lead singer as they begin work on a new album. The show at The Fillmore was the last for the band's lead singer. The documentary will be released in conjunction with the live album and a digital or physical copy of the documentary will be included in the vinyl package. -

Carla Bozulich decided to hunt down what was killing her and rip it to shreds, unsure how but doing it anyway. She put together a great band. They were lucky in lots of ways. The drive behind the project was to burn up indoctrination and shame and guy-centric rock, and to have fun with friends in the L.A. scene. They weren't trying to break barriers or be the best, just to scratch their way out of the cold, cold ground and to make and play some fresh songs. The band for this record was Bill Tutton (contra-bass), Kevin Fitzgerald (drums), Daniel Keenan (guitar), Jesse Greene (violin) and Carla Bozulich (vox, guitar). Four bonus tracks include Nels Cline (in an alt-cover of Can's You Doo Right, for example) and Jessica Moss (Silver Mount Zion) playing on a brand new Fibbers track. Thank You For Giving Me Life. Minutemen and / or Pettibon fans, the lyrics of this track will ring bells! There are so many genders. Many of her lyrics, in Bozulich's mind, are written and sung by a man or a genderless creature, just saying what has to be said. Girl bands are a great statement against misogyny in rock and roll, but it turned out that playing with the Fibbers, consisting of random gendered humans who strongly opposed discrimination, was also a beautiful solution-to simply play with the best musicians she knows, drawn together by pure musical magnetism and wanting to be soaked in underground madness and beauty. Lost Somewhere Between The Earth And My Home was recorded by Steve Fisk (Nirvana, Unwound, Beat Happening) and released in 1995. It is, in turns, tempestuous and tender. Classic country wraps up with noise, a crack-band and a singular voice mix like a twisted, American journey.
