Chairmen of the Board were one of the most popular soul acts to emerge from Detroit in the early '70s, achieving success with soul classics such as 'Give Me Just A Little More Time' (US #3) which sold over a million copies. The group were the flagship act on the Invictus label, founded by legendary songwriting and production team Holland-Dozier-Holland. Known for the distinctive vocals of frontman, General Johnson, Chairmen of the Board put themselves on the R&B map with top ten hits including 'Chairman of the Board' and 'Finder's Keepers'. The group also recorded the original version of 'Patches' (co-written by Johnson) which would become a hit for Clarence Carter and go on to win a Grammy award in 1971.

Over the years they have developed a simple musical formula: bass and drums putting down a funky, locked-in groove, luscious and slippery blues guitar runs coupled with sophisticated keyboard washes, tightly syncopated horns, and sweet, angelic backup harmonies. Lyrics are simple, heart-felt and true, and come from the been there, done that school of hard knocks, delivered with equal helpings of heartach and humor. In the early 70's, with the arrival of arranger Wardell Quezergue, Malaco claimed its first major hit with King Floyd's Groove Me. Malaco became a destination studio for big stars like Paul Simon, The Pointer Sisters, and many New Orleans and Stax recording artists who wanted the polished style mixed with Southern seasoning that the studio provided. It was this environment that created Dorothy Moore's eternal classic, the haunting Misty Blue. Recorded in one take, the song was a massive hit, yielding gold records and a spot in the pantheon for Malaco. The End of the Rainbow is another example of this classic style.But styles shifted, and with the arrival of Disco music, R&B artists suddenly became pigeon-holed as Blues artists and radio turned away from them. Iniciadores de este estilo y pioneros en el uso de los sintetizadores en Reino Unido, lograron gran popularidad en la década de los 80 luego de un cambio en sus integrantes. En el verano de 1982, un álbum remix de Dare, llamado Love and Dancing fue publicado bajo el nombre del grupo League Unlimited Orchestra, alcanzando el nº3 en la tala del Reino Unido. Durante el período de Dare, The Human League a menudo era asociada al movimiento New Romantic. It was released as a single in the UK on 8 November 1982 and peaked at number two in the UK Singles Chart. It was written jointly by lead singer Philip Oakey with keyboard players Jo Callis and Ian Burden, and produced by Martin Rushent. Mirror Man " was the first track written and recorded by the Human League after they returned from their World Tour, conducted in the wake of the enormous international success of their album Dare. "Mirror Man" was conceived and written as a celebration of Oakey and Wright's love of Motown records. It has been described as electronic northern soul, with Oakey's main verses delivered in deliberate sentences with emphasis on the last word of each sentence. Vocalists Susan Ann Sulley and Joanne Catherall feature prominently throughout the song but have no lyrics, providing backing vocals of "oohs" and "ahhs". Recording and production was overseen by Martin Rushent, who had produced the band's album Dare.

And with good reason'or, actually reasons! First of all, as the house band of the hallowed Stax label, The MG's pretty much invented the sound of Southern soul, playing on records by everybody from Otis Redding to Wilson Pickett to Carla Thomas. Second, on their own as Booker T & the MG's, they came up with some of the most indelible instrumental jams of all time, including'but by no means limited to!''Green Onions.' And, third, each member of the band was an absolute monster on their instrument, to this day revered and copied by untold numbers of musicians. Indeed, by the time the mid '60s rolled around, bands on both sides of the Atlantic wanted to sound like Booker T. Jones, Steve Cropper, Al Jackson, Jr, and Lewie Steinberg (replaced about halfway through this collection by the great Donald 'Duck' Dunn). And what was that sound? Well, a typical MG's tune started from the bottom-up, resting on the rock-solid drumbeat of Jackson and the in-the-pocket bass work of Steinberg and, later, Dunn, over which keyboardist Jones and guitarist Cropper traded slinky and/or stinging licks. But these cats weren't just riff-happy groove masters; Jones basically codified the classic Hammond organ sound and Cropper's guitar tone remains the Holy Grail of anyone who's ever picked up a Fender Telecaster. Together, they recorded 49 single sides for Stax under the name of Booker T. & the MG's, and you'll find the first 29 (yes, 29!) of 'em right here, released on a single CD or double-LP pressed in blue vinyl and limited to 1000 copies.
