SHIRELLES - BABY ITS YOU (COLV) SHIRELLES - BABY ITS YOU (COLV) When Shirley Owens, Doris Coley, Addie Micki Harris and Beverly Lee got together to sing for a high school talent show in 1957, they had no intentions of becoming professional musicians. However, fate stepped in when classmate Mary Jane Greenberg told her mother, Tiara Records owner Florence Greenberg, about the group. Greenberg signed them to her label, released a single and then sold the label, along with the fledgling group, to Decca Records. Decca soon dropped them, which left Greenberg free to sign them to her new label, Scepter Records. At Scepter, The Shirelles hit their stride, working with the cream of the Brill Building songwriters. One of these songwriters, Luther Dixon, was hired by Greenberg to write for and produce the group and together they developed the group s signature sound. Under his guidance, the Shirelles enjoyed seven Top 20 hits and launched the girl group genre. Released as a single in 1961, Baby It s You reached #8 on the pop charts and #3 on the R&B charts. Written by Burt Bacharach, Mack David and Luther Dixon (under the pseudonym Barney Williams), the song has become an enduring classic, covered by The Beatles, Smith and many other artists. It also served as the title track for The Shirelles first album of 1962. Baby Its You features 12 outstanding songs, including their single Soldier Boy which topped the Billboard Hot 100. Sourced from the original analog session tapes, this Sundazed reissue faithfully reproduces one of the most influential albums of the early 60s (certainly, Barry Gordy would agree). Keeping to the folk tradition, Zulal writes its arrangements in an organic style, using the simplicity of voice to capture the heart of Armenia's rural music. The vocal trio self-produced Notes to a Crane, their second album, which includes 18 audio tracks, transliterations and English translations of all songs. In this album, the group takes Armenia's village folk melodies and weaves intricate arrangements that pay tribute to the rural roots of the music while introducing a sophisticated lyricism and energy. Pastoral images that hint at a nation's loss, nostalgia, hope, and pride infuse the arrangements here. CAPTAIN BEEFHEART - SUN ZOOM SPARK 1970 TO 1972 CAPTAIN BEEFHEART - SUN ZOOM SPARK 1970 TO 1972 Rhino intends to change that with a limited edition four-LP collection that revisits the albums Captain Beefheart (aka Don Van Vliet) recorded with the Magic Band in the early Seventies. It includes all three albums, which have been remastered for the first time, as well as an entire disc featuring 14 previously unissued outtakes from that era. Recorded over a couple of weeks in the summer of 1970 at United Recording Group in Hollywood, Lick My Decals Off, Baby was released the following October. One of Van Vliet's favorites, the album represents the apex of his dissonant style and includes such standout tracks as the quirky-funny I Love You, You Big Dummy and the exquisite solo guitar piece One Red Rose That I Mean. It was followed by The Spotlight Kid, which was recorded at The Record Plant in Los Angeles during the summer of 1971. It features a more barebones, blues-rock sound on songs like Click Clack, I'm Gonna Booglarize You Baby and Alice In Blunderland. Lester Bangs wrote in Rolling Stone (March '72) that Beefheart had struck the balance between intensely personal type of statement and mass appeal, praising the album for its wit and genius.Soon after, Clear Spot was released. Recorded in the summer of 1972, the album introduced several standout tracks, such as the vulnerable love song My Head Is My Only House Unless It Rains, the soul ballad Too Much Time, and the pulsing Big Eyed Beans from Venus. The fourth and final LP in SUN ZOOM SPARK includes unreleased tracks and is a trove of alternate versions, rehearsals and outtakes from the sessions for The Spotlight Kid and Clear Spot. If anyone ever assembles a comprehensive Hooker discography that delineates not only his original releases, but where and when these have been reissued, he or she deserves a government grant or something, because it's not so easy to determine where or if some of these have not appeared on reissues or CD elsewhere. It does, however, yield a sizable scoop of material from Hooker's most primeval phase, the first half devoted to recordings he issued under his own name, including the well-known "Boogie Chillen" and "Crawlin' King Snake." It's the final ten tracks that might be more of a draw for collectors, since it features songs he cut under the pseudonyms Delta John, Birmingham Sam, and Texas Slim. All of those songs are recognizably early Hooker, with their irregular meters, foot-stompin' beats, and intense bursts of citified Delta blues notes. Whether because these were cut under assumed names or due to other reasons, occasionally it seems like these were opportunities to ramble afield into rather far-out territory for urban blues of the era. "Goin' Mad Blues," originally credited to Birmingham Sam, has a compelling almost rock boogie rhythm and violently strident guitar riffs, while Texas Slim vented a darker side of the Hooker persona, as indicated in titles like "Nightmare Blues," "Devil's Jump," and "I'm Gonna Kill That Woman." The first major-label, digitally recorded album,  Bop  is a nice set of moderately known to obscure tunes from the '50s and '60s (along with a  Cooder / Tim Drummond  original) that doesn't always live up to its promise.  Cooder  and his excellent band, which includes the rhythm section of  Tim Drummond  and  Jim Keltner  along with guitarist  David Lindley, understand the material and are more than capable of laying down a decent groove, but something must have gotten lost in translation from what was played to what came across on the recording. There's a thinness to the tracks that undermines the performances, which according to  Cooder  is due to the digital recording. If you check out the live version of  Bop Till You Drop 's opener, "Little Sister," from the No Nukes record (using the same band), you can see what surely could have been. Still,  Bop  is worthwhile given  Cooder 's penchant for choosing great tunes, as well as the tight performances, brilliant guitar work, and a handful of great guest vocalists (including  Chaka Khan). A few of the highlights include his arrangement of the early-'60s  Elvis  hit "Little Sister," the soulful "The Very Thing That Makes You Rich (Makes Me Poor)," an instrumental take on  Ike & Tina Turner 's "I Think It's Gonna Work Out Fine," and "I Can't Win," featuring  Cooder 's longtime cohort  Bobby King  on lead vocal.

It's a collection wherein quirky, generation-spanning folk and rock choices are rooted in something more rewarding than mere eclecticism for its own sake--namely the sense of unlikely, hopeful humanity that Kimya Dawson's core songs bring to its slightly askew axis. Dawson's spotlight performances here range from a handful of decidedly twee solo cuts, to the album's key Anyone Else But You, (her 2001 duet with Adam Green released under the Moldy Peaches moniker,) and a couple more upbeat oddballs by the singer's more recent Antsy Pants project. That effusively innocent musical core is augmented with a pair of eminently sympathetic tracks from Scottish twee-pop magnates Belle and Sebastian, then seasoned with a mix of catalog tracks that spans eras from Buddy Holly to Sonic Youth--utilizing styles as diverse as the Kinks, Mott the Hoople, and Velvet Underground--that nonetheless manage to bolster the film's tender emotions with a graceful, (if skewed,) charm that's hard to resist. --Jerry McCulley Director Jason Reitman made a whole slew of great decisions with his justly lauded film Juno.
