In fact, it's so good that the fact that he went on to cut five other albums and produce artists ranging from Fontella Bass to Chuck Jackson to Little Johnny Taylor almost seems besides the point. This is a stone soul masterpiece, full of grit and groove, with a breathtaking stylistic breadth stretching from funky soul ('If You Took a Survey'; 'How Do You Spell Love') to romantic soul balladery ('I Get My Groove from You') to James Brown-style workouts ('Make Sure You Can Handle It') to socially-conscious, wah wah-drenched commentary ('The Whole Funky World Is a Ghetto') and all points in between. But what really makes this record mind-blowing is that Patterson wrote all but one song (the one he didn't write, 'Right On Jody,' is an answer song to Johnnie Taylor's big hit 'Jody's Got Your Girl and Gone'). For its first-ever LP reissue, we've pressed up 700 copies in transparent purple vinyl and re-created the original album art complete with lyric sheet. Every soul searcher needs this one!

CLAYTON MERRY - MERRY CLAYTON (GREEN VINYL) CLAYTON MERRY - MERRY CLAYTON (GREEN VINYL) Discográfica:   Real Gone Music As the Academy Award-winning documentary 20 Feet from Stardom made abundantly clear, Merry Clayton is one of the greatest and most distinguished female backup singers in rock and soul history, having sung with everybody from Bobby Darin to Ray Charles to Joe Cocker to Linda Ronstadt to Neil Young to Lynyrd Skynyrd (on Sweet Home Alabama). But her most famous vocal turn, of course, was her 1969 duet (It's just a shot away!) with Mick Jagger on Gimme Shelter. The notoriety she gained from that led to a recording contract with Lou Adler's Ode label, and to this 1970 debut solo record, which took its title from the Stones track and featured Merry's own hit solo version of the song. But don't stop there—produced by Adler, arranged by the great Gene Page, and featuring Billy Preston on keyboards, this album is an overlooked soul classic, with Merry's indomitable voice taking songs like James Cleveland's Here Come Those Heartaches Again, The Doors' Tell All the People, and James Taylor's Country Road to dizzying heights (she also turns Bridge over Troubled Water into the sanctified gospel hymn it truly is). OSCAR PETERSON: Montreux '77 [UK 1977] LP OSCAR PETERSON: Montreux '77 [UK 1977] LP Oscar Peterson Jam   "Montreux '77"   LP (Pablo)   1977 made in UK cat. num.  2308 208 #jazz   Ali And Frazier 9:20 If I Were A Bell 10:39 Things Ain't What They Used To Be 12:42 Just In Time 9:49   One of many Pablo albums taken from the 1977 Montreux Jazz Festival, this outing teams pianist  Oscar Peterson, bassist  Niels Pedersen, and drummer  Bobby Durham  with tenorman  Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis  and trumpeters  Clark Terry  and  Dizzy Gillespie. The talented (and very competitive) players really dig into the opening uptempo blues ("Ali and Frazier") and they continue cooking on "If I Were a Bell,"  "Things Ain't What They Used to Be," and "Just in Time." As often happens in this type of situation, the musicians mutually inspire each other. This is one of  Dizzy Gillespie 's better sessions of the '70s; in fact, there are no losers during these battles.

With bassist  Sam Jones  and drummer  Bobby Durham,  Peterson  tears into the old gospel favorite "Travelin' On" with a passion second to none. Following it is a beautiful treatment of  Johnny Mandel 's timeless ballad "Emily," which runs for over ten minutes but never loses its impact.  Durham  sets the pace with his soft percussion to set up  Antonio Carlos Jobim 's "Corcovado" (later known as "Quiet Nights"), though  Peterson  devours the song whole with a breathtaking display of his formidable technique.  Francy Boland 's "Sax No End" was a relatively new composition, having been recorded for the first time just the previous year by the Kenny Clarke-Francy Boland Big Band. But one can almost hear a larger ensemble by listening to  Peterson 's virtuoso interpretation in an uptempo setting, assisted by  Jones ' agile bass and  Durham 's steady percussion.  Peterson  cools off his audience with an extended exploration of  Benny Carter 's "When Lights Are Low," though his fresh approach makes it seem like a brand new composition. Like other releases in  Oscar Peterson 's Exclusively for My Friends series,  Travelin' On  is warmly recommended.

However, even though many of the songs on this soundtrack are not as memorable as their more popular collaborations, this album is not that bad. In fact, many of the songs are quite catchy, including "The World Is a Circle" and "Reflections." Some of the vocals are sung by the actors, including  Sally Kellerman  and the late  Bobby Van.  Burt Bacharach  has a certain knack for production of not-so-great singers (himself included) and, fortunately, it shows here with the actors. Other actors had their singing parts dubbed by more seasoned vocalists.  Shawn Phillips  is the singer on the title track.
