Este grupo norteamericano de rock y hard rock originarios de la ciudad de Cleveland, Ohio, atesoran tras de si una rica pero poco valorada obra discográfica y que es primordial en la historia del rock; por él habrían de pasar excelentes músicos, fundamentales luego en el devenir de bandas importantes dentro del panorama rock La formación inicial cuenta con Glen Schwartz (guitarra), Tom Kriss (bajo) y el líder y fundador, el batería Jim Fox que a mediados de 1966 logran una reputada fama en el circuito de rock de Cleveland y sus alrededores. Pero esta alineación duraría poco ya que a principios del 69, Schwartz abandona para unirse al grupo Pacific Gas and Electric y es sustituido por el guitarrista Joe Walsh, quien pronto toma las riendas del grupo con su personalidad y su talento. En esta época el grupo llego a talonear a Cream en la ciudad de Detroit, realizando una soberbia actuación que no hizo más que asentar la calidad e incrementar la popularidad del grupo a nivel nacional. El primer LP, Yer album (69), les revela como gran banda. Tras él se va Kriss y entra Dale Peters (bajo y voz). Con esta formación, el trío graba sus tres mejores obras: Rides again (70), Thirds (71) y el doble LP grabado en vivo Live in concert (72). Y con el respaldo de Pete Townshend, James Gang se presentan en Europa con gran éxito, teloneando a The Who. Posteriormente la banda intervendría en la película Zachariah, un musical western surrealista basado en la novela de Herman Hesse; Siddartha. En noviembre de 1971, Joe Walsh decide abandonar la nave para seguir en solitario una carrera llena de éxitos. Walsh junto a Joe Vitale y Kenny Passarelli formarían la banda Barnstorm y publicaron su primer álbum Barnstorm (1972) y un año despues el excelente álbum The Smoker You Drink, The Player You Get (1973) que contenía el hit Rock Mountain Way que se convertiría en uno de los clásicos del rock de todos los tiempos. Poco después la desgracia de ceba con Walsh al perder a su hija pequeña en un atropello. Destrozado por esta perdida Walsh decide disolver el grupo y se retira durante mas de un año, hasta que casi a finales de 1974 se anima a publicar su primer álbum en solitario So What (1974) al que seguirán los exitosos You Can't Argue with a Sick Mind (1976), But Seriously Folks (1978) o There Goes The Neighborhood.(1981). Pero sin duda seria su entrada como guitarrista de The Eagles y su primordial contribución al apoteósico Hotel California (1976) y al magnifico The long Run (1979) lo que le llevaría al estrellato mas absoluto. Pero siguiendo con James Gang, después del abandono de Joe Walsh la banda se amplia con varios músicos mas por un lado Domenic Troyano (guitarra y voz) y por otro Roy Kenner (voz) que junto a Fox y Peters, graban los álbumes Straight shooter (72) y Passin' thru' (73). En 1973, es Troyano quien abandona para unirse a The Guess Who, siendo reemplazado por el guitarrista Tommy Bolin con el se publican los brillantes Bang (73) y Miami (74). Pero el año siguiente Bolin acepta la llamada de Roger Glover para unirse a Deep Purple en sustitución de Ritchie Blackmore, siendo seguido de Kenner, que también deja la banda. En 1975, Fox y Peters reaparecen con Rick Shack (guitarra) y Buba Keith (guitarra y voz), con quienes graban los mediocres Newborn (75) y Jesé come home (76), que se convierten en los dos últimos trabajos oficiales del grupo y posteriormente se precipita la disolución definitiva de James Gang. Ya en 1972 se había editado el recopilatorio The best of James Gang, con lo mejor de la etapa estelar, en la que Joe Walsh era el hombre fundamental de una banda que ha pasado a la historia como una de las pioneras del hard rock norteamericano. The brief "Blues for Mingus," a wry salute from one master bassist to another (Mingus  died about six months before this album's release), is a cool acoustic breather for piano trio, and the eloquent  Stan Getz  can be detected, though nearly buried under the garish vocals and rock-style mix, on "The Streets of Philadelphia." Yet even the talented  Clarke  in full creative flower couldn't quite fill a double set with new material, so he has a tendency to reprise some of his old memorable riffs a lot, and there are several energetic snapshots of his live band in action. In its zeal to get this two-LP set onto one disc, Epic deleted three of the original 15 tracks -- including at least one gem, the sizzling hard rocker "All About" -- and scrambled the order of the remaining tunes. Which is dumb, because the missing tracks only take up a bit less than 12 minutes of playing time, not enough to overload a 65-minute disc.
