En su llamado período comercial, Bowie cambia de discográfica (hasta la fecha había sido RCA), firmando un contrato multimillonario con EMI y graba el que será su disco más vendido: Let's Dance, producido por Nile Rodgers de la banda Chic. La canción homónima del álbum se convirtió en uno de los más grandiosos sencillos con éxito, llegando al número 1 en el Reino Unido, los EE. UU. y varios otros países. Los sencillos posteriores " Modern Love" y " China Girl ", llegaron al número 2 en el Reino Unido, y se convirtieron en grandes éxitos a ambos lados de Atlántico. Meses después ya en 1983 sale otro nuevo single, la irresistiblemente pegadiza “(Keep Feeling) Fascination ” que fue otro grandísimo éxito y que desgraciadamente ha envejecido fatal. Todo parecía preparado para la edición del nuevo álbum con dos grandes éxitos de adelanto pero el grupo no estaba convencido con el material que tenían entre manos y se produce una crisis en el grupo que termina con la ruptura de relaciones con el productor Martin Rushent y el comienzo desde cero del nuevo álbum con los productores Hugh Padgham y Chris Thomas, mientras en USA se edita el ep “ Fascination! ” con temas procedentes de los singles “ Mirror man ” y “ Keep feeling (Fascination), aparte de un tema nuevo “ i love you to much ” en una versión producida por Rushent muy superior y diferente a la que terminaría en el siguiente álbum del grupo “hysteria”. It was produced by Ian Stanley and released by Capitol Records in the US and Polydor in the UK on 26 October 1987. It contained the hits " From the Hip ", " My Bag ", and " Jennifer She Said ". Although the album reached number nine in the UK, it failed to chart in America and was not embraced by all critics: Mainstream is the only Lloyd Cole and the Commotions release not to sell at least 100,000 copies in the US. The album took two years to make as finding a producer proved difficult. The band first went with Chris Thomas, when that did not work out they brought in Stewart Copeland. With Copeland they only recorded one track, " Hey Rusty ", then finally found Ian Stanley. Donegan reflected in 2004 that "with the previous LP, Easy Pieces, we had tried to broaden out and make more of a pop record and it hadn't really worked. It sounded rushed and the songs were not all up to standard. So, a year after Easy Pieces, we went into the studio to try and make something more powerful. But the LP that we actually made took so long that we lost our initial vision by the time we finished it. The songs that Lloyd was writing were more introspective, so the stadium rock idea gradually went out the window." This singer-songwriter was also proficient on guitar and harmonica. Shearston moved with his family to Sydney at the age of 12, after his father’s farm was destroyed by drought. By the time Shearston was 19 he was a professional singer performing traditional Australian music in pubs, clubs and on radio and television. In the late 50s he made his first recording, for the Festival label, and this was followed by a number of albums for CBS Records in the early to mid-60s. Two of these albums were described as ‘among the best records of traditional music ever made in Australia’. In 1965, Shearston received an award for the best composition of the year when ‘Sometime Lovin’’ was covered by a number of artists including Peter Paul And Mary. In the mid-60s, together with Martyn Wyndham-Read, he recorded a live album on the Australian Score record label, although CBS would not let Shearston appear on the album. In addition, he had his own folk music television programme.  Shearston then travelled to the USA in 1968 and lived there for the next four years. During the mid-70s Shearston relocated to Britain, where he recorded two albums for Charisma Records. Shearston’s one major hit in the UK came in 1974, when ‘I Get A Kick Out Of You’ made the Top 10. This single made Shearston the first Australian artist to have a simultaneous hit in Britain and Australia. Despite the long gap between albums he carried on and worked the folk clubs of Europe. Returning to Australia from England in 1988, Shearston was made a Deacon of the Anglican Church in December 1991, and has served in the parishes of Narrandera, Deniliquin, Hay, and Bangalow. In 2001, he released his first new studio album in over a decade.
