VISCAYNES - VISCAYNES & FRIENDS (GATE) VISCAYNES - VISCAYNES & FRIENDS (GATE) Discográfica: Org Music Formed in Vallejo, California in the 1950's, The Viscaynes were a high school doo-wop act who are said to be the first recorded singing group of Sylvester Stewart (aka Sly Stone), and the launching point of his extensive career. The group gained some early notoriety with a performance on Dick Stewart's Dance Party, after which they were introduced to producer George Motola. Charting on KYA radio's top 60 chart in 1961, Yellow Moon became a hit song for The Viscaynes, though they split up around the time of the song's popularity. The Viscaynes & Friends is the first official full-length release from the group, coming to light only after a master tape reel was discovered more than half a century since the group disbanded. The release features seven tracks from Sly and The Viscaynes, along with one cut from the The Individuals and two from The Precisions, all of which were produced by Motola. The vinyl release comes in a gatefold jacket with extensive liner notes from author, historian, and radio host Rickey Vincent.

It is a selection of work in progress with rough mixes, backing tracks, alternate versions, and new material recorded at the time. The band wrote and recorded nearly all of Led Zeppelin II while touring relentlessly to support its debut album. Incredibly, the album was released just seven months after Led Zeppelin in October of 1969. CANNONBALL ADDERLEY: CANNONBALL AND EIGHT GIANTS [ESP 1974] LPx2 CANNONBALL ADDERLEY: CANNONBALL AND EIGHT GIANTS [ESP 1974] LPx2 Cannonball Adderley "Cannonball And Eight Giants" LPx2 (Milestone) 1974 made in Spain cat. num. MM.40-068/69 S #jazz previously released as "Portait Of Cannonball" and "Things Are Getting Better" on Riverside label. A Little Taste 4:34 Straight Life 5:30 Minority (Take 2) 7:24 Minority (Take 3) 7:05 Nardis 5:30 Blue Funk 5:30 People Will Say We're In Love 9:38 Blues Oriental 4:55 A Few Previously Unissued Words From Cannonball And Then... 0:47 Things Are Getting Better 7:09 Serves Me Right 4:44 Groovin' High 5:17 The Sidewalks Of New York 6:56 Sounds For Sid 6:24 Just One Of Those Things 6:44 "Portait Of Cannonball" This fine Riverside debut by Adderley was cut just a few months after the alto saxophonist had contributed to Miles Davis ' stellar Milestones release. Joining Adderley for the six tracks here are fellow Davis alumni Philly Joe Jones on drums and Bill Evans on piano. These three are augmented by the wonderful and often-underrated Blue Mitchell on trumpet and the equally illustrious Sam Jones on bass. Everyone is in top form on a varied set that takes in two Adderley originals (the fine ballad "Straight Life" and "A Little Taste"), a classic Gigi Gryce number ("Minority"), and Miles ' oft-covered "Nardis." Filling out the program, we have a rare Sam Jones -penned cut, "Blue Funk," and a lone standard in the Rogers & Hammerstein chestnut from Oklahoma, "People Will Say We're in Love." One of the highlights from Adderley 's hard bop prime. "Things Are Getting Better" This title provides ample evidence why alto Cannonball Adderley is considered one of the masters of his craft. Here he joins forces with Modern Jazz Quartet co-founder Milt Jackson on vibes to create a variety of sonic atmospheres. They are backed by the all-star ensemble of Wynton Kelly on piano, Percy Heath on bass, and the one and only Art Blakey on drums. The moody "Blues Oriental" opens the set with Jackson immediately diving in with his trademark fluid runs and shimmering intonation. Adderley counters with a light and lively line that weaves between the rhythm section. The optimistic "Things Are Getting Better" is a good-natured romp as the co-leads trade and cajole each other into some downright rollicking exchanges. This directly contrasts with the sultry "Serves Me Right," which allows the combo members to demonstrate their collective musical malleability. The interaction between Adderley and Jackson sparkles as they entwine their respective playing with an uncanny singularity of spirit. The cover of Dizzy Gillespie 's "Groovin' High" contains another spirited performance with some thoroughly engaging improvisation, especially during Adderley 's voracious solos. "Sidewalks of New York" bops freely as Jackson unleashes some sublime licks against a hearty and equally boisterous sax. Adderley 's "Sounds for Sid" demonstrates his uncanny ability to swing with a strong R&B vibe. With drop-dead timing and profound instrumental chops, this cut is undoubtedly one of the best from Adderley 's earliest canon. The album concludes with a jumping reading of Cole Porter 's "Just One of Those Things." While Wynton Kelly has been uniformly solid, his interjections stand out here as he bridges and undergirds the two as they banter with flair and aplomb. This set can be recommended without hesitation to all manner of jazz enthusiast, as it quite literally offers something for every taste. [Some reissues include two bonus tracks supplementing the original seven-song running order, alternate takes of "Serves Me Right" and "Sidewalks of New York."]

SHIRELLES - BABY ITS YOU (COLV) SHIRELLES - BABY ITS YOU (COLV) When Shirley Owens, Doris Coley, Addie Micki Harris and Beverly Lee got together to sing for a high school talent show in 1957, they had no intentions of becoming professional musicians. However, fate stepped in when classmate Mary Jane Greenberg told her mother, Tiara Records owner Florence Greenberg, about the group. Greenberg signed them to her label, released a single and then sold the label, along with the fledgling group, to Decca Records. Decca soon dropped them, which left Greenberg free to sign them to her new label, Scepter Records. At Scepter, The Shirelles hit their stride, working with the cream of the Brill Building songwriters. One of these songwriters, Luther Dixon, was hired by Greenberg to write for and produce the group and together they developed the group s signature sound. Under his guidance, the Shirelles enjoyed seven Top 20 hits and launched the girl group genre. Released as a single in 1961, Baby It s You reached #8 on the pop charts and #3 on the R&B charts. Written by Burt Bacharach, Mack David and Luther Dixon (under the pseudonym Barney Williams), the song has become an enduring classic, covered by The Beatles, Smith and many other artists. It also served as the title track for The Shirelles first album of 1962. Baby Its You features 12 outstanding songs, including their single Soldier Boy which topped the Billboard Hot 100. Sourced from the original analog session tapes, this Sundazed reissue faithfully reproduces one of the most influential albums of the early 60s (certainly, Barry Gordy would agree). After one listen, you won t want nobody, nobody but The Shirelles.

MALACO LAST SOUL COMPANY - MALACO LAST SOUL COMPAN MALACO LAST SOUL COMPANY - MALACO LAST SOUL COMPAN Discográfica: Malaco Records Malaco Records in Jackson, MS has been recording soul, gospel and R&B artists for the last 50 years. Over the years they have developed a simple musical formula: bass and drums putting down a funky, locked-in groove, luscious and slippery blues guitar runs coupled with sophisticated keyboard washes, tightly syncopated horns, and sweet, angelic backup harmonies. Lyrics are simple, heart-felt and true, and come from the been there, done that school of hard knocks, delivered with equal helpings of heartach and humor. In the early 70's, with the arrival of arranger Wardell Quezergue, Malaco claimed its first major hit with King Floyd's Groove Me. Malaco became a destination studio for big stars like Paul Simon, The Pointer Sisters, and many New Orleans and Stax recording artists who wanted the polished style mixed with Southern seasoning that the studio provided. It was this environment that created Dorothy Moore's eternal classic, the haunting Misty Blue. Recorded in one take, the song was a massive hit, yielding gold records and a spot in the pantheon for Malaco. The End of the Rainbow is another example of this classic style. But styles shifted, and with the arrival of Disco music, R&B artists suddenly became pigeon-holed as Blues artists and radio turned away from them. Malaco stayed true to down home music, at the same time adding drum machines and synth patches to their musical signature. The label sold singles to club jukeboxes and suddenly the dance floors filled up. ZZ Hills Down Home Blues became the anthem of the folks who love to hit the club on the weekend. Just like they can party down to Hole in the Wall and The Blues Is Alright, people also can hit the floor to heartache, Benny Latimore cautions his ex-lover about a Bad Risk boyfriend, and Denise LaSalle breaks the third wall and speaks directly to you in Don't Mess with My Man. After the untimely death of ZZ Hill, Johnnie Taylor joined Malaco's roster and gave the label their
