Over the years they have developed a simple musical formula: bass and drums putting down a funky, locked-in groove, luscious and slippery blues guitar runs coupled with sophisticated keyboard washes, tightly syncopated horns, and sweet, angelic backup harmonies. Lyrics are simple, heart-felt and true, and come from the been there, done that school of hard knocks, delivered with equal helpings of heartach and humor. In the early 70's, with the arrival of arranger Wardell Quezergue, Malaco claimed its first major hit with King Floyd's Groove Me. Malaco became a destination studio for big stars like Paul Simon, The Pointer Sisters, and many New Orleans and Stax recording artists who wanted the polished style mixed with Southern seasoning that the studio provided. It was this environment that created Dorothy Moore's eternal classic, the haunting Misty Blue. Recorded in one take, the song was a massive hit, yielding gold records and a spot in the pantheon for Malaco. The End of the Rainbow is another example of this classic style.But styles shifted, and with the arrival of Disco music, R&B artists suddenly became pigeon-holed as Blues artists and radio turned away from them. Malaco stayed true to down home music, at the same time adding drum machines and synth patches to their musical signature. The label sold singles to club jukeboxes and suddenly the dance floors filled up. ZZ Hills Down Home Blues became the anthem of the folks who love to hit the club on the weekend. Great Balls of Fire! is a 1989 American biographical film directed by Jim McBride and starring Dennis Quaid as rockabilly pioneer Jerry Lee Lewis. Based on a biography by Myra Lewis and Murray M. Silver, Jr., the screenplay is written by McBride and Jack Baran. The film is produced by Adam Fields, with executive producers credited as Michael Grais, Mark Victor, and Art Levinson. The early career of Jerry Lee Lewis, from his rise to rock and roll stardom to his controversial marriage to his 13-year-old cousin that led to his downfall, is depicted in the film. Until the scandal of the marriage depreciated his image, many had thought Lewis would supplant Elvis Presley as the "King of Rock and Roll" in the 1950s. The story was co-written by Myra Gail Lewis (her autobiography Great Balls of Fire!), the former wife of Jerry Lee Lewis, with Murray Silver. Despite this, co-writer Silver was upset by the lack of accuracy in the film, claiming it was "phoney". Director Jim McBride admitted that it was never his intention to tie his film to the facts, and stated "This movie does not represent itself in any way to be a historical documentary. We use the book as a jumping-off point." Lewis has openly stated that he hates the film and the book it was based on. Lewis did, however, praise Quaid's portrayal of him in the film, saying "he really pulled it off".Quaid even learned to play "Lewis-style" piano for the role. This was the final film of character actor Trey Wilson. He died at age forty from a cerebral hemorrhage in January 1989, prior to the film's release. An original motion picture soundtrack was released by the producers on the Polydor Records label on June 8, 1989. Lewis re-recorded his music from the 1950s for the soundtrack with the title track " Great Balls of Fire," "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On" and "That Lucky Old Sun." The soundtrack contains 12 tracks. A music video of the song "Great Balls of Fire", with Quaid and Lewis playing the piano and containing snippets of scenes from the film, was featured on the original VHS video release preceding the film. VISCAYNES - VISCAYNES & FRIENDS (GATE) VISCAYNES - VISCAYNES & FRIENDS (GATE) Discográfica:   Org Music Formed in Vallejo, California in the 1950's, The Viscaynes were a high school doo-wop act who are said to be the first recorded singing group of Sylvester Stewart (aka Sly Stone), and the launching point of his extensive career. The group gained some early notoriety with a performance on Dick Stewart's Dance Party, after which they were introduced to producer George Motola. Charting on KYA radio's top 60 chart in 1961, Yellow Moon became a hit song for The Viscaynes, though they split up around the time of the song's popularity. The Viscaynes & Friends is the first official full-length release from the group, coming to light only after a master tape reel was discovered more than half a century since the group disbanded. The release features seven tracks from Sly and The Viscaynes, along with one cut from the The Individuals and two from The Precisions, all of which were produced by Motola. The vinyl release comes in a gatefold jacket with extensive liner notes from author, historian, and radio host Rickey Vincent.

Vivió sus primeros años en Palmira y en Medellín adelantó sus estudios musicales. Su última actuación la realizó en el Coliseo Cubierto de Cali en 1960.     Luis Ángel Mera Samaniego, formidable barítono, nació en Santander de Quilichao, el 19 de septiembre de 1924, y era tal su categoría que llegó hasta el exclusivo escenario del "Metropolina Opera House". Mera fue "descubierto" por el gran maestro Pietro Mascheroni en el Club Unión de Medellín, cuando era el cantante de un grupo llamado "La pelotera". El maestro entonces le preguntó a Mera: "¿Usted qué hace? " y Mera le respondió: " Estudio química en la UPB". Y el canto? "Lo hago en mis ratos libres". Es entonces cuando Marcheroni le dice: "deje esa cosa de la química que lo suyo es el canto. Sus condiciones son excepcionales. Hace mucho tiempo no escucho una voz como la suya". Sin abandonar sus estudios universitarios, Luis Ángel comenzó a cantar con la orquesta dirigida por Mascheroni de la emisora " La voz de Medellín". A comienzos del otoño de 1945 fue llamado por el Metropolitan Opera House de Nueva York para que hiciera el Don Basilio de "El Barbero de Sevilla" compartiendo escena con el fabuloso tenor Tito Schipa quien hacía el "Conde de Almavida" en la ópera. La actuación de Mera le valió ser tenido en cuenta para hacer luego los papeles de "Colline" y "Marcelo" en ‘La bohemia’ de Puccini. Luego la "Julliard School of Music" de Nueva York, una de las más afamadas academias del mundo, le otorgó una beca para continuar sus estudios de canto durante dos años más. A su regreso a Colombia contrae matrimonio con Ana Milena Barona. Al regreso de su último viaje a Nueva York se perdió en la bohemia hasta morir en extrañas circunstancias: en la mañana del sábado 19 de agosto, un mes antes de cumplir 48 años, Luis Ángel fue encontrado por dos agentes en la Avenida Roosevelt de Cali. Estaba tendido en el andén, descalzo, con las manos ensangrentadas pero aún con vida. Cuando uno de ellos lo levantó, le preguntó quién era y él respondió: “Soy el hijo de Benjamín y Primitiva”, y lo repetía durante el corto trayecto que recorrió la radiopatrulla desde la Roosevelt hasta el Hospital Departamental adonde ingresó como NN. Luis Ángel Mera falleció poco después. El parte médico decía que la muerte se había producido por un trauma craneoencefálico causado por golpe contundente. No hubo homenajes, sólo silencio y oscuridad.

The brief "Blues for Mingus," a wry salute from one master bassist to another (Mingus  died about six months before this album's release), is a cool acoustic breather for piano trio, and the eloquent  Stan Getz  can be detected, though nearly buried under the garish vocals and rock-style mix, on "The Streets of Philadelphia." Yet even the talented  Clarke  in full creative flower couldn't quite fill a double set with new material, so he has a tendency to reprise some of his old memorable riffs a lot, and there are several energetic snapshots of his live band in action. In its zeal to get this two-LP set onto one disc, Epic deleted three of the original 15 tracks -- including at least one gem, the sizzling hard rocker "All About" -- and scrambled the order of the remaining tunes. Which is dumb, because the missing tracks only take up a bit less than 12 minutes of playing time, not enough to overload a 65-minute disc. Hunt for the double-LP version if you can still play vinyl.
