Sin embargo, el que quedara tan fascinado por Lennon, McCartney, Harrison y Pete Best (primer baterista antes de la llegada de Ringo Starr) cuando acudió una noche a un club de rock de la calle Mathew Street, conocido como The Cavern, no iba a cejar en su empeño por conseguirles, al menos, la posibilidad de que demostraran su talento. Y, finalmente, los Decca Records decidieron brindarles una pequeña oportunidad(posteriormente se supo que fue el propio Epstein quien había pagado al sello discográfico para que les posibilitara el encuentro). Fue entonces cuando el productor Dick Rowe mandó a su asistente Mike Smith a Liverpool para escuchar al grupo, también impresionado por la fe de Epstein, quien decía que “The Beatles llegarían a ser más grandes que Elvis”. Tras oírlos en directo, pactaron la audición para alrededor de veinte días después, el 1 de enero de 1962. Los Beatles decidieron emprender el viaje el día antes y pasar la noche en Londres, y aunque víspera de año nuevo no es buena fecha para viajar Neil Aspinall, compañero y amigo del colegio de McCartney y Harrison que había sido contratado en julio de ese año por la banda como road manager, puso su furgoneta con destino a la capital inglesa. No obstante, sería ese viaje el primer presagio de que la grabación con Decca no estaba destinada a convertirse en un evento que marcara un antes y un después en la historia de The Beatles, o por lo menos no de la forma que esos cuatro jóvenes británicos tendrían en mente en la parte trasera del auto de Aspinall, quien se confundió de trayecto e hizo que la travesía durara aproximadamente diez horas. Al día siguiente se produjo la famosa actuación marcada por varias circunstancias. En primer lugar la duración, ya que los Beatles sólo pudieron tocar durante alrededor de una hora. Además, las canciones que tocaron fueron las que Brian Epstein había decidido previamente, siendo sólo tres de ellas obra de John y Paul (“Like Dreamers Do”, “Hello Little Girl” y “Love of the Loved”). Sin duda uno de los puntos fuertes de en lo que se convertiría posteriormente el Fab Four era la capacidad compositiva del dúo Lennon-McCartney, un elemento que se mostró parcialmente encadenado en los estudios de Decca. El resto de piezas que tocaron fueron covers de hits célebres del momento, destacando el “Memphis, Tennessee” de Chuck Berry y el “Crying, Waiting, Hoping” de Buddy Holly, o canciones más antiguas con arreglos modernos como el “Bésame Mucho” de la mexicana Consuelo Velázquez. Es indudable que el setlist elegido por el mánager del grupo no fue el más acertado, quizás ciertamente conservador dada la naturaleza de todas las pistas, más calmada y pausada que el rock que solían tocar en The Cavern y que sería el germen de lo que se estaba cocinando. Además, como decimos, en la formación aún se encontraba un Pete Best cuya habilidad con las baquetas era bastante limitada y muy por debajo del nivel de los otros tres Beatles. Durante la audición, producida por Mike Smith, surgieron varias discrepancias, ya que la voz de los de Liverpool no era la de siempre, se mostraba dubitativa, y por ello Epstein sugirió cambios sobre la marcha que no resultaron efectivos. El cuarteto volvió a casa a la espera de la respuesta de los ejecutivos de Decca mientras en el estudio se producía ese mismo día otra sesión con The Tremeloes. Dicha respuesta se demoró varias semanas y fue, para decepción de los Beatles, negativa. La discográfica decidió rechazar al grupo alegando que la utilización de la guitarra eléctrica estaba en decadencia y acabaría en desuso, por lo que los grupos que se basaban en ese sonido no triunfarían.Además, Rowe, quien al final tomó la decisión de elegir a The Tremeloes (sin eludir a Mike Smith que influyó enormemente en la decisión puesto que era él quien había escuchado más a ambas bandas), aconsejó a Epstein que se olvidara de ellos, los dejara de lado y se dedicara a producir discos de otras bandas de su ciudad porque “Los Bealtes no tienen futuro en el negocio de la música”. Decca Records y Dick Rowe dejaron escapar la oportunidad de tener en sus filas a la que se convertiría en la banda más grande del mundo, aunque el propio McCartney declaró que pese a que en su momento su opinión era otra, ahora no le parece disparatado que no les contrataran ya que la calidad de su sesión no fue ni mucho menos extraordinaria. Lennon siempre se mantuvo enojado y rencoroso con Decca, y Harrison, paradójicamente, los ayudó y aconsejó contratar a The Rolling Stones, previniendo así que el sello cometiera un error de tal calibre dos veces. Brian Epstein por su parte no hizo caso a Decca y siguió trabajando con The Beatles para que seis meses después lograran otra audición, en este caso con Parlophone Records, una subsidiaria de EMI, con el resultado que todos sabemos. Los temas tocados no variaron mucho respecto a los que presentaron a Decca, pero no se olvidaron de “Love Me Do”, “P.S. I Love You” y “Ask Me Why”, que formarían parte de su álbum debut de 1963, “Please Please Me”. Allí conocieron a otro hombre que sería clave en su camino, George Martin, quien a la postre produciría toda su discografía excepto su último álbum, “Let It Be”, siendo Phil Spector el encargado de hacerlo. Fue él también quien desaprobó la presencia de Pete Best en el grupo, aunque la llegada de Ringo fue cosa de los propios Beatles. Si bien también han circulado varias teorías al respecto de esto, McCartney explicó que su amistad no podía comprometer su carrera profesional y en definitiva, su forma de vida. Martin supo ver lo que en Decca no hicieron, y aunque la calidad de su música aún estaba lejos de lo que podían esperar de ellos, había potencial, su sonido podía pulirse. Y así comenzó a trabajar con ellos para que poco tiempo después se convirtieran en un fenómeno de masas nacional y posteriormente mundial. Aun teniendo a los Rolling Stones, seguramente Dick Rowe, Mike Smith y toda la casa discográfica Decca estuvieron un buen tiempo dándose de cabezazos contra las paredes por dejar pasar la oportunidad de tener a unos Beatles que tampoco podemos saber si se hubieran convertido en lo que fueron sin George Martin quien, dado su peso en la trayectoria de la banda, se disputa con Epstein el título de ‘El Quinto Beatle’.
