Spirit Island (Core Games) Spirit Island is a complex and thematic cooperative game about defending your island home from colonizing Invaders. Players are different spirits of the land, each with its own unique elemental powers. Every turn, players simultaneously choose which of their power cards to play, paying energy to do so. Using combinations of power cards that match a spirit's elemental affinities can grant free bonus effects. Faster powers take effect immediately, before the Invaders spread and ravage, but other magics are slower, requiring forethought and planning to use effectively. In the Spirit phase, spirits gain energy, and choose how / whether to Grow: to reclaim used power cards, to seek for new power, or to spread presence into new areas of the island. The Invaders expand across the island map in a semi-predictable fashion. Each turn they explore into some lands (portions of the island); the next turn, they build in those lands, forming settlements and cities. The turn after that, they ravage there, bringing blight to the land and attacking any native islanders present. The islanders fight back against the Invaders when attacked, and lend the spirits some other aid, but may not always do so exactly as you'd hoped. Some Powers work through the islanders, helping them (eg) drive out the Invaders or clean the land of blight. The game escalates as it progresses: spirits spread their presence to new parts of the island and seek out new and more potent powers, while the Invaders step up their colonization efforts. Each turn represents 1-3 years of alternate-history. At game start, winning requires destroying every last settlement and city on the board - but as you frighten the Invaders more and more, victory becomes easier: they'll run away even if some number of settlements or cities remain. Defeat comes if any spirit is destroyed, if the island is overrun by blight, or if the Invader deck is depleted before achieving victory. The game includes different adversaries to fight against (eg: a French Plantation Colony, or a Remote British Colony). Cataclysm - A Second World War Cataclysm is not your typical game about World War II. The game begins in 1933, not 1939, and is global in scope. Germany is far from dominating Europe. Japan is on the march in Asia. Every crisis is an unexpected opportunity. There is no hindsight and anything can happen. Truly grand strategic in scope, Cataclysm requires players to lead nations, not just armies or fleets. You must craft a diplomatic strategy, develop political support for your policies at home, shift your economy to a war footing, and build up the forces you need to deter or vanquish your enemies. There is no traditional I-go-you-go turn structure in Cataclysm. Counters representing political actions, military actions, units, and possible events are drawn at random from an action cup. As each counter comes out, the owning player resolves it, and play swiftly moves on to the next draw. You have to make plans to execute when your chance comes up, but you have no idea when, or in what order, events will transpire. A game about global war gives every nation armies, air forces, and fleets. But in Cataclysm, military pieces have no numeric values. You know what forces you have and where they are deployed. To resolve combat, each side rolls up to three dice and compares their single highest die. You can devote more resources to a campaign (generating more dice or bonuses), but that does not guarantee a favorable outcome. Your efforts can lead to triumph… or to disaster. In Cataclysm, you are free to explore alternatives. The Soviets can construct a massive long-range bomber force. Japan can build powerful armored forces to overrun Siberia. Germany can invade Britain, or France can take Berlin, provided you craft a strategy that gets you there.

There are four different colors corresponding to four different actions. On his turn, a player can choose a die and perform the corresponding action: Buy goods at the port, move a client or the consul on the market, make offerings to divinities to recover bonuses (cards), and buy reputation. The value of the die shows the number of times that the action may be made. The goal is to obtain the highest reputation at the end of the day by setting up stalls on the market to sell goods at the best price that the player will have bought in port.

Otherwise, the more *specific* words or phrases you want to include, the more I will need to employ obscure terms, acronyms, and lesser-known foreign language vocab to connect everything together. Q. Why can't I just give you 70 words to smush into a crossword? A. That's just not the way crosswords or the English language work, for better or worse. Your standard NYT weekday puzzle will have *4* long-ish themed entries, because that's already relatively difficult to design around. You'll get those long ones *plus* whatever else I can reasonably cram in there without making the rest of your puzzle completely illegible with acronyms and crosswordese. Let me be perfectly clear – not every entry will relate to the list you provide me, not even half. That is impossible to do while adhering to crossword construction standards unless the list you provide is so broad as to encompass thousands of subjects. Another tool of customization is leaning more heavily on the clues to relate certain words back to your specs. For instance, say you wanted to include JACKNICKLAUS in a puzzle, alongside half a dozen other long-ish terms. It may just be impossible to find a good place among the lexicon you've provided for a 12-letter name with two Ks and a J. On the other hand, PAR (or PGA or GOLF or USOPEN, etc.) might fit into the puzzle, so for the clue I might write, "Goal for Jack Nicklaus." It may not be quite as satisfying, but it's generally the best way to squeeze the most personalization into a puzzle. Thus, looser themes are easier to construct around than strict vocabulary. Q.
