Si Bob Marley fue el gran mesías del reggae en el mundo, Jimmy Cliff fue su primer profeta, abriendo caminos nuevos, a finales de los años sesenta, a la música jamaicana. Cliff, con su voz y su rostro (también ha sido actor), sacó al reggae del aislamiento y tendió puentes hacia nuevas culturas musicales. Con frecuencia ha sido criticado por ello, pero él ha seguido siempre su camino. Jimmy Cliff nació en agosto de 1944 en St. Catherine (Jamaica), y su verdadero nombre es James Chambers. LOS CANARIOS-Vol.2- LAS GRABACIONES DE ÍDOLOS Y CANARIES CD LOS CANARIOS-Vol.2- LAS GRABACIONES DE ÍDOLOS Y CANARIES CD Teddy Bautista al frente de los Canarios se consagró como la máxima figura del soul en nuestro país. Era un grupo que parecía surgido de la nada, pero llevaban detrás años de trabajo con dos denominaciones distintas y dos escenarios diferentes. Comenzaron a cantar en su Islas Canarias pero discográficamente nacieron en Barcelona como Los Idolos. Y bajo ese nombre grabaron versiones de temas de Beatles y otras figuras del momento hasta completar tres EP’s (discos de cuatro canciones) que son las doce primeras que aparecen en nuestro disco. Un contrato le llevó a los estados Unidos donde fueron rebautizados como The Canaries, y allí grabaron una serie de maquetas y demos que no acababan de aparecer en el mercado. Lo hicieron por fin en forma de LP bajo el título de “ Flying high ” (Volando alto) y eran otras doce canciones, muchas de composición propia y un par de ellas escritas por The Tokens, grupo que les apadrinó en tierras americanas. No salió al mercado hasta después de triunfo de Canarios en España.
