Now this has got to be the most unusual thing on the face of the planet: to hear The Police do prog rock. On Schoener's previous album, Flashback, he had all three members, Sting, Andy Summers play on that album. I have to say I hadn't heard that one. With Video Magic, Stewart Copeland sat this one out, with Evert Fraterman in his place. I have to let you know that Schoener had Andy Summers play on many of his albums even way before The Police ever existed. The album opens with " Octagon ", which is an instrumental piece, dominated by Andy Summers guitar playing. Here, I get reminded so much more of Pink Floyd than anything The Police would ever do. Sting here is sticking to bass duty. " Speech Behind Speech " is a real trip: totally drenched with Mellotron, and Sting here is doing the singing. You know right away that Sting's voice is perfect for the usual music you expect the Police to do, but in a prog setting, it sounds really peculiar. " Natural High ", again has Sting doing vocals, it's about as close to The Police sound you're gonna get here, but it's still packed with Mellotron, and is actually an excellent song. All this Mellotron work came from Schoener himself. " Code Word Elvis " is largely an orchestral piece, no surprise, given that Eberhard Schoener had spent his time conducting orchestras. " Night Bound City " is a purely electronic piece that you know none of the dudes from The Police participated in, while " San Francisco Waitress " brings to mind Sting's post-Police solo albums like Dream of the Blue Turtles, especially because of the jazzy feel and sax (although sax here is by Olaf Kübler, who used a tenor sax, unlike Branford Marsalis who tended to soprano sax). The last piece, "Koan" is an instrumental piece that tends to be rather minimalist. Now this isn't going to be the greatest thing you'll ever hear. Police fans might find it a bit unsettling to see their heroes doing prog rock, and neither is it the most cohesive album out there (Schoener couldn't decide whether to do prog rock, electronic, or orchestral music), but if you're a proghead and you wonder what would happen if the Police were a prog rock band, give this album a try (you can also see that The Police would never be anywhere as popular as they were if they were a prog rock band, beside they came during the punk/new wave era and capitalized on that instead, which was to their benefit). But get this album if you can find it for cheap, which is what I did. Don't overspend. File this under: curiosity.

Given the sadly neglected status of the band's early catalog -- meaning anything that was released prior to 1982's breakthrough  New Gold Dream (81-82-83-84)  -- through the early 2000s, it is doubly unfortunate that a compilation like this remained out of print for an extended period of time. And though the studio albums remained in print in the U.K.,  Simple Minds ' early years hardly received the red carpet compilation treatment that their later works did. While nothing here came close to approaching the stadium-pleasing popularity of later smashes like "Don't You (Forget About Me)," "Alive and Kicking," or even "Promised You a Miracle,"  Celebration  might provide a little shock to an initiated someone who snaps up a copy. It's a near-definite that plenty of people who own  New Gold Dream  and/or the  Glittering Prize 81/92 compilation remain oblivious to the fact that  Simple Minds  released five albums that ranged from good to spectacular between 1979 and 1981, before  New Gold Dream  came along with its perfect balance of art and pop to connect with a mass audience. Not only was 1979-1981 a prolific period for the band, but it was a period that witnessed them blossoming from a decent guitar-based post-punk band to a far more rhythmic and experimental entity that gradually shed their influences while ambitiously building on them. And as the few brave souls who have remained devout  Simple Minds  fans from day one might tell you,  Celebration  has stood the test of time better than  Glittering Prize  track-for-track.

In the course of a crowdfunding campaign, intiated with the hope to support the creation of that album, the dream of every niche artist became true: It's overwhelming success enabled main man Andy Schmidt to invest almost two years full-time into writing and recording a new Disillusion record without having to take on a day job for sustenance. That fan-finance actually laid the foundation for this work cannot be valued highly enough. The Liberation is the result of the Herculean creative task Andy Schmidt applied himself to, spending countless hours of songwriting and recording. Discográfica:   Real Gone Music Arguing about which of Martin Scorsese's pictures is his best is fodder for an all-night bull session, but of one thing there can be no doubt: the guy is obsessed with music. Many of his greatest films have either been about music (e.g. The Last Waltz or the recent Dylan Rolling Thunder 'mockumentary') or have featured a veritable mixtape for a soundtrack; in fact, sometimes it's hard to tell which came first, the montage accompanying the music, or his desire to have a particular song appear in a movie come hell or high water. That's because nobody, but nobody, cuts film to a great rock and roll tune like Scorsese (and his legendary editor Thelma Schoonmaker); and of all his films, it's his lone Best Picture winner, The Departed, that arguably is propelled the most by its soundtrack. The Dropkick Murphys' 'I'm Shipping Up to Boston' during Leonardo DiCaprio's stint in jail is the real scene-stealer, but the version of 'Comfortably Numb' during his love scene with Vera Farmiga is another highlight, albeit a controversial one (folks either love it or hate it). The rest of the soundtrack lives up to those two selections'it's safe to say The Departed wouldn't have gotten its Best Picture nod without Scorsese's canny music choices. We're bringing it to vinyl for the first time inside a jacket and printed inner sleeve, and pressing up 1100 copies in a limited kelly green edition to honor the film's Boston Irish roots!

Recorded in the fall of 1971 while TJW was opening for Creedence Clearwater Revival, this show became the proverbial legendary lost live album, and for good reason: Warner Bros. recorded the concert on multitrack tape, fully intending it to be released. But for some reason lost to the mists of time, the album never came out until Rhino Handmade released it in 2010 exclusively via their website. Which means it never went to regular retail at all in any format, and that's a real shame, because you could make a good argument that it's the best Tony Joe White album of 'em all, with a set list to die for (a 10:35 version of Polk Salad Annie!), a great band (featuring Duck Dunn on bass), pristine fidelity, and plenty of Swamp Fox attitude. This 2-LP release comes, like the CD did, inside a gatefold jacket featuring a front cover cut out displaying the art on one of two inner sleeves with great liner notes by Ben Vaughn and the late, great Tony Joe White himself. World in My Eyes fue el tema que cerró la promoción del álbum Violator. La carátula de "World in My Eyes" tiene la silueta de alguien haciendo con las manos un forma similar a la de unas gafas. El tema está apoyado en una base electrónica principal sostenida ejecutada por Alan Wilder, como era su costumbre de sonido grave y sobre la cual se conduce toda la función, agregando una serie de notaciones semi-graves siempre de sintetizador y efectos igualmente sólo electrónicos, aderezado con una sugerente letra sobre amor con una cínica proclama a “Mostrar el Mundo en mis Ojos”; un modo de decir el mundo de DM que para ese momento ya gozaba de un considerable éxito. Aunque en apariencia es un tema fácil y quizás hasta efectista, sólo puede ejecutarse con tres sintetizadores pues supone dos bases electrónicas, una disuelta sobre la otra, así como una tercera en los puentes, con lo cual de nuevo cada integrante del grupo adquiría protagonismo en su teclado, mientras la letra no fue muy profunda ni excesivamente pretenciosa. En conjunto de todos sus elementos era un tema un tanto retrospectivo, especialmente considerando la época en que se hizo cuando la música integralmente electrónica estaba ya relegada, incluso por DM que cada vez incorporaba mas cuerdas, sin embargo las bases electrónicas con que está construido son graves otorgándole un cierto sonido pesaroso y oscuro como habían practicado en álbumes anteriores y con lo cual World in My Eyes se convertía en un suave ejercicio de Dark Wave rítmico destinado especialmente a las pistas de baile. Andrew Fletcher de DM ha declarado que éste es su tema favorito de la banda. El sencillo contiene dos lados B, haciendo de Violator el único disco de Depeche Mode cuyos cuatro sencillos tienen al menos un lado B, los de World in My Eyes fueron los temas Happiest Girl y Sea of Sin también de Gore, y de hecho en portada el título del disco sencillo es World in My Eyes / Happiest Girl / Sea of Sin. "World in My Eyes" has two exclusive B-sides, making Violator the only Depeche Mode album with all four singles having at least one exclusive B-Side, including instrumentals. The first major-label, digitally recorded album,  Bop  is a nice set of moderately known to obscure tunes from the '50s and '60s (along with a  Cooder / Tim Drummond  original) that doesn't always live up to its promise.  Cooder  and his excellent band, which includes the rhythm section of  Tim Drummond  and  Jim Keltner  along with guitarist  David Lindley, understand the material and are more than capable of laying down a decent groove, but something must have gotten lost in translation from what was played to what came across on the recording. There's a thinness to the tracks that undermines the performances, which according to  Cooder  is due to the digital recording. If you check out the live version of  Bop Till You Drop 's opener, "Little Sister," from the No Nukes record (using the same band), you can see what surely could have been. Still,  Bop  is worthwhile given  Cooder 's penchant for choosing great tunes, as well as the tight performances, brilliant guitar work, and a handful of great guest vocalists (including  Chaka Khan). A few of the highlights include his arrangement of the early-'60s  Elvis  hit "Little Sister," the soulful "The Very Thing That Makes You Rich (Makes Me Poor)," an instrumental take on  Ike & Tina Turner 's "I Think It's Gonna Work Out Fine," and "I Can't Win," featuring  Cooder 's longtime cohort  Bobby King  on lead vocal.

Combining their various influences (including R&B, pop, dance, electronica),  Heaven 17  fused these styles together to made an almost perfect sound. A strong melody, stunning vocals from  Glenn Gregory, and tight production equal a fascinating glimpse into the human struggle. Adding a number of session players, including a guitarist,  Heaven 17  was able to expand and build on their solid sound.  Gregory  is also allowed to branch out on this album and write more personal and political statements that were not clearly heard on their first two albums. Fans will not be disappointed, and in fact, this could be the album to win new fans over. "Sunset Now," and "Flamedown," are just a few of the reasons for this ep greatness.
