En su llamado período comercial, Bowie cambia de discográfica (hasta la fecha había sido RCA), firmando un contrato multimillonario con EMI y graba el que será su disco más vendido: Let's Dance, producido por Nile Rodgers de la banda Chic. La canción homónima del álbum se convirtió en uno de los más grandiosos sencillos con éxito, llegando al número 1 en el Reino Unido, los EE. UU. y varios otros países. Writing for the BBC, David Quantick said "the combination of Bowie and Rodgers on the title track was perfect – Bowie’s epic lyric about dancing under 'serious moonlight' and the brilliant filching of the crescendo 'ahh!'s from the Beatles' version of the Isley Brothers' 'Twist and Shout' were masterstrokes, each welded to a loud, stadium-ised drum and bass sound". The song introduced Bowie to a new, younger audience oblivious to his former career in the 1970s. Although the track was his most popular to date, its very success had the incongruous effect of distancing Bowie from his new fans, with Bowie saying he did not know who they were or what they wanted.His next two albums, made as an attempt to cater to his new-found audience, suffered creatively as a result and Bowie cited them as the albums he was least satisfied with in his career. In 2007, Bowie gave R&B singer Craig David permission to sample the song for his single "Hot Stuff (Let's Dance)".

Este lanzamiento con interpretaciones de los clásicos del artista llega acompañado de las tres últimas grabaciones de estudio de David Bowie. Estas tres canciones –co-producidas por el propio Bowie y Tony Visconti, y grabadas con Donny McCaslin y su cuarteto (la misma banda que tocó en el álbum ★ de Bowie)- tituladas “No Plan,” “Killing A Little Time” y “When I Met You,” añaden una nueva dimensión a las versiones de las mismas canciones interpretadas por el reparto del musical. La versión original de “Lazarus” incluida en ★ también se incluye en el álbum del elenco del musical.  El álbum★ ha sido seleccionado para competir por el Premio Mercury 2016, y como parte de la ceremonia que se llevará a cabo el 15 de Septiembre, Michael C. Hall interpretará la canción “Lazarus” junto a Henry Hey y la banda que toca en la obra Lazarus. La ceremonia se emitirá en directo desde el Eventim Apollo, Hammersmith en las radios BBC 4 y BBC Radio 6 Music. El álbum Lazarus interpretado por el reparto del musical fue producido por el director musical del espectáculo Henry Hey, que ya había trabajado con Bowie en “The Next Day”, e incluye las voces de Hall, Caruso, Cristin Miloti, Michael Esper y otros miembros del reparto, todos ellos acompañados por la banda de siete integrantes que Hey reunió para la temporada en Nueva York. El álbum se grabó el 11 de Enero de 2016. Al llegar al estudio, tanto los músicos como los actores del elenco estaban en shock tras la muerte de Bowie la noche anterior. Sus sentidas interpretaciones de ese día tan especial, han quedado plasmadas en esta grabación.
