Máxime cuando hablamos de una de las figuras más influyentes y, a la par, menos conocidas de la historia del Rock y el Blues Para hablar de Graham Barnes (nombre real de Mr. Lee) nos tenemos que remontar a los barrios de clase media del Nottingham de 1960. Alvin, fuertemente influenciado por unos padres amantes del Blues y el Jazz, comienza a tocar la guitarra a los 14 años. Cuando sólo tenía 16 años formó su primera banda, The Jaybirds, la cual cambió de nombre varias veces hasta convertirse en Ten Years After. La banda despegó demasiado pronto. Esto supuso una apertura de miras para Lee que consolidó el estilo propio de lo que, más tarde, sería su propia visión del Rock Psicodélico que hacían Ten Years After: un Blues demasiado salvaje para ser ortodoxo y un Rock demasiado extraño para ponerlos en la misma lista que a The Beatles. Esta visión particular de Ten Years After los catapultó como banda de culto incluso antes de ser una banda conocida en todo el país. Ten Years After obtuvo un contrato discográfico y comenzaron a tocar en varios festivales de cierto renombre. Seguían siendo desconocidos para la gran mayoría y casi siempre eran una banda de soporte, pero la calidad y la fiereza que desprendían dejaba huella poco a poco en los espectadores. Su primer disco, homónimo, tuvo un éxito modesto en Inglaterra. No obstante en Estados Unidos el álbum fue una pequeña sorpresa y el afamado promotor Bill Graham lo dispuso todo para prepararles varias giras (que al final se convirtieron en 28 en solo 7 años). En propias palabras de Alvin Lee: "éramos una gramola itinerante, tocábamos noche tras noche, ciudad tras ciudad. Tocábamos en la misma ciudad varias veces al año... era una locura". Se podría presumir que Ten Years After, con esa reputación ya serían una banda de renombre a esas alturas. Pero el mercado americano era muy diferente al inglés. Lo que un día estaba de moda, al día siguiente era olvidado por completo, y la promoción del grupo no era su fuerte, lo suyo era tocar en directo. Como ha pasado muchas veces a lo largo de la historia del rock, todos los grandes grupos tienen un instante glorioso que los hace volar del anonimato al estrellato en un lance de, llamémosle por esta vez, suerte. El bautizo de fuego de Ten Years After fue a priori "una actuación de soporte en un festival hippie modesto que se estaba fraguando en un rancho de Bethel (New York), donde debido a lo precario del cartel y el presupuesto sólo tocarían unos 15 minutos". Cuando a Alvin Lee le pasaron una de las cuartillas de propaganda con información del festival pudo leer bien claro y en alto "Woodstock. 3 Days of Peace & Music...". El resto, amigos, es historia. La actuación de Ten Years After, y en particular de Alvin Lee fue inmortalizada en el mítico film "Woodstock", y fue recordada como una de las más salvajes junto a las de Hendrix y The Who. A partir de ese momento, el olimpo de los dioses del Rock Psicodélico esperaba a Ten Years After. En total, llegaron a grabar diez albumes y es reconocida como una de las bandas más influyentes de todos los tiempos, pese a separarse en 1973. Tras la separación, Alvin Lee se dedicó a colaborar con otros artistas y a sacar su propio material en solitario. Tocando todos los palos desde el Country al Jazz, fue siempre un guitarrista en la sombra de su propio éxito. Quizás el no encasillarse en un solo estilo le hizo no tener suficiente repercusión en sus trabajos. A lo largo de los años ha grabado con gente tan dispar como Mick Taylor, George Harrison o John Mayall. Su estilo como guitarrista se puede catalogar de Blues Rock de tintes progresistas. Muchas de sus frases son recordadas como cánones actuales dentro del Blues Rock. Algunos grandes artistas como Joe Bonamassa, John Mayer, Richie Sambora, Andy Timmons o Derek Trucks le han nombrado como una de sus principales influencias. A título personal quiero recomendar un recopilatorio, Pure Blues (Capitol, 1995), que presenta lo mejor de Alvin Lee tanto en solitario como junto a Ten Years After.
